You don't start small, do you?  I don't mean in terms of the size of the piece but in terms of the difficulty.

i also started with segmentation using mostly pine then eventually adding a different color wood here and there. it was easier to get the basics for intarsia. now i only do intarsia there are so many beautiful wood to show off your projects i think thats what makes it so addictive lol.
