New guy on the block
« on: November 10, 2014, 06:35:48 pm »
Howdy from Elmwood Park IL.

I am looking to buy a scroll saw and I just found a Delta Q3 for 130.00
What do you think. Is this a good saw for a beginner? Price wise is in my budget.
Also looking for something under 300. Any ideas?

Thank you
Michael

Hi Michael and welcome to the forum.  I'm Julie from Texas.  I have never used that saw, but the price is right and if it runs well, get it.  I have seen the most amazing work on the worst saws.  We all start somewhere, but you need a saw to start.

Welcome to the site. I'm Jim from Montana. I don't have any personal experience with that saw, but I looked at the pictures and it seemed like it would be satisfactory to use. The price looks good too.

Welcome to the forum.  Glad you are here.  I don't know about that saw but here is a review of it:

http://www.scrollsaws.com/SawReviews/Q3.html

The main complaint I have read about Delta products is the availability of replacement parts.  I am not speaking from experience, only what I have read about Delta in general.  If you have the model number you can check a place like ereplacementparts.com and see what parts are available for it.

welcome to the forum

Now the Q3 is a very good machine, at 2000 spm I think it was the fastest machine that delta made, the only thing to be careful of is It is a C arm machine and can be quite aggressive compared to others, so you will need to be careful when doing delicate fretwork and the likes.

Thank you all for the welcome and advice on the Delta Q3.

I would like to ask another question.
What will be better for a beginner, an old Delta Q3 or a new Shop Fox.
Q3 is 130.00, Shop Fox is about 160.00

Thank you all.

regardless of being a beginner If you got hold of a Q3 I would keep hold of it and buy a second saw for the finer work
