Pattern from a photo

Hi Steve, I have watched you video thousands of times on making a pattern from a photo using corel draw. I have been scrolling and making patterns for 13 years but still I can not make a pattern of myself. I can do other people but not myself. There has to be a different process for dark skinned people. Can you please help me.

Hi Mytoya,

Steve has a regular full time job and tries to have a personal life. Add to that his heavy workload in taking care of his blog, making patterns and videos, answering e-mail.

Hi there EIEIO!!!! I downloaded Gimp and this is the pattern I came up with... Thank you so much!!!! Gimp has been suggested before but I never had the time to learn it. Well I found some TIME and I am Grateful to you for your help. I am going to try out Inkscape as well in a few days.

Looks like you got a great result. I assume you used the GIMP Color/Threshold function. That works in some cases - it's hit or miss depending on the photo. When it works, it looks good and is easy to cut. Make sure to look for islands in the pattern.

The attached instruction for GIMP + Inkscape is for times that Threshold does not work so well, and to bridge islands in your pattern. Hope it helps.

I do have a question. How can I change the pattern I make with Gimp into a jpeg?? I tried to send the pattern to my son so I could show him what I have learned. He couldn't open it.

by default, GIMP saves in its own format (XFS). But if you just type ".jpg" to the end of the file name in the Save or Save As dialog box then it will prompt for some other detail and save as a JPG. You can also save as a GIF  file or a bunch others.

When working with GIMP+Inkscape I usually save the 1st raw file (the Filter/Artistic/Photocopy) as a JPG, then open in Inkscape and "Trace Bitmap", save as SVG (scalable vector graphic), open the SVG in GIMP, finish editing, then save the final as GIF.
