Where to buy wood
« on: July 21, 2014, 08:40:22 am »
In todays email from Steve there were questions about where to buy good crafting wood. Where I live, the best I have found for poplar, red oak, maple, pine, and a couple of others has been at my local Lowes. I am just getting into intarsia, so the poplar there is awesome with so many varying colors. For my Baltic birch, I go to Michaels. The boards are generally straight, not too many repairs. My kids always get me gift cards for both stores, so I haven't spent too much of my own money. And for my exotic woods, just like Steve said, http://www.Ocoochhardwoods.com. I just received my order from them and I couldn't be happier. Hope this helps!

When I was in the States, I would buy from them. Great products and you couldn't find nicer people! They get my vote as well!

I see a lot of beautiful boards on ebay, but the darn shipping always doubles the price of the board.  Most of the sellers will let you combine boards to help reduce the shipping which helps a little.  I am also wanting to try Intarsia, and am trying to build up my stock of wood.  I have made friends with a custom cabinet maker on another forum and he sent me a box of cutoff just for the cost of shipping.  He is putting another box together right now for me.  The first box was some of the most beautiful walnut, cherry and maple I have ever had.  So, that is another way to go, make friends with a custom cabinet maker, but don't find the one I have! ;D
