I got a jointer!

OH ya! I feel on top of the world. It's my first jointer ever. I don't have the planer to accompany it yet, but I should have it by the summer. The jointer is a 1952 Craftsman 4"er. Pretty tiny but like my dad would say "Built like a brick @#!^ house."  I got it off of craigslist for $100. It came with a stand and a 1 HP motor. I did some research and because Sears is so freaking awesome, they have the manual for it online. The manual suggests a 1/3 HP motor, so I think I got enough power running to it. Eventually, I will upgrade to a 6" but for now, it'll let me mill the wood I need for pictures frames and other smaller projects.

Now to spend the weekend restoring it and running a 12 point inspection/maintenance/alignment on it to get it true again.

Man, I am so pumped!

Heck yeah, good for you! Do you have a fence for it? Might come in handy for edge jointing if you need to glue up boards to make wider boards. If not, just face jointing is all a scroller needs.

Even though its only a 4 incher you can still get almost 8 inches to plane down, do one side rotate then do other side. A good person to watch on youtube for woodworking things is Matthais Wendal he can make some of the most coolest things, he even made out of wood a band saw mill, made his own table saw out of wood, I love watching his videos.

It does have a fence, but I took it off for cleaning. Forgot to put it back on for the camera. The fence is super small so I'll need to make it taller for edging some bigger pieces. And I've already watched most of Wendel's videos. Bought his tilting router plans awhile back, just haven't had the capital to buy the wood yet for it. I agree. The guy is a genius. I'd never try building the band saw though. That requires some serious enginerring to get it balanced and I just don't think I got what it takes to do it safely.

Jointers are great tools!  I just upgraded from a 6" to an 8".  I do hope you got the blade guard as well.  If not, be very careful with your hands!  Let the chips fly!

Oh ya I forgot to mention, I got the blade guard too but took it off for cleaning as well. However, I think the spring for it is worn out or something, since it doesn't spring back when the guard is swiveled. I haven't looked much into solving that yet but from the cursory glances I took I don't know if I can get access to the spring. The jointer itself seems to be constructed of one solid piece of cast iron. I'm thinking I'll be able to get access to it once I take off the blades and the cylinder thingie that they are attached to.

If the spring is there it probably isn't broken.  Whenever you remove the guard you have to sort of wind the spring before you put the guard back on.  I'm guessing you are setting the guard on without winding the spring.  Play with it some more and see if it isn't ok.

Congrats, a little cleaning, a few adjustments and you will be off and running. My 6" jointer looks a lot like that one. It is a cast iron Tool King and works great.
