Business card holder
« on: January 26, 2014, 10:57:32 am »
This is a modification of a box I'd made some time ago. The box is a piece of 1x4 pine cut to inside and outside wall rings, with 1/4" ply on top and bottom (this is not BB Ply - note the different color of the center material - but it works fine for the box skin). The top card holder is cut from solid birch using Steve's business card box pattern:
http://www.stevedgood.com/businesscardbox.pdf.
Finished with Howard's Feed n Wax. Simple but effective.
A bit of experimentation - rather than PVA wood glue I tried Titebond Instant Bond - a CA glue for wood - to attach the top pieces. Hold for 5 seconds and it bonds, handle in 7 seconds, full cure in 8 hours. We'll see how it holds up on a piece that gets touched a lot.

Nicely done and a great place to store either extra business cards or paper clips etc.

I prefer the rounded edges and the color variation. Cheers, Barry.

Do you mean compared to Steve's pattern? I like to round the corners of a box myself, but Steve used fancier wood. This is the 1st box I made early last year (without the card holder on top). Today I would not use the heart grain for the rings - I prefer the look of straight grain on the box end - but this was a mod for a quick need (which was cancelled today anyway because of snow).

You need to watch for reversing the top - it can get stuck if put on backwards (easy to force closed but hard as heck to open). On some of these boxes, in the cut between the inner and outer rings, I made one corner square and the other 3 rounded. That way the top can only be put on one way.
