Glues and Mastics
« on: January 28, 2014, 02:08:59 pm »
Just throwing this out... frequently there are questions about the best glues and varnishes used in our favourite hobby. It would be helpful to have a spreadsheet of sorts indicating what brands are used and a rating, perhaps a star system (?). I'm not sure any indication would be required as to use as most, if not all, are joining wood products to wood products. Similarly, one for varnish, shellac, varathane, etc.  I'd be glad to receive the preferences and pertinent comments on my e-mail, build the spreadsheet and then poste the results rather than cluttering up this website. Do you think it's worth the effort? Thanks, Barry.

There was a good review of different glues in issue 53 page 31 (Holiday 2013) of ScrollSaw Woodworking and Crafts. Basically,
  • PVA (Elmer's Wood Glue, Titebond I and II, Gorilla Wood Glue, Aleen's Tacky) is the strongest for good wood joints
  • Cyanoacrylate (CA, Superglue) is weaker than PVA but faster to set.
  • Polyurethane (Gorilla, Titebond Polyurethane) is weaker, expands in the joint and must be clamped tightly
  • Epoxy & Silicone (Epoxy, JB Weld, E6000) used to join wood to something else (e.g. knife handle), to fill a gap, or for end grain gluing. Messy to work with.

I'll be interested to see your summary of finishes.

Merlin that's a site worth knowing about. If I get enough replies from my poste I'll go ahead and build the spreadsheet. Thank you, Barry.

Barry, why wait for replies. As Nike likes to say, "Just do it!"

Send me a note on what you've used, and whether you kept using it or not, and why not. I'm accepting input from all countries, not just Canada and the U.S.

58 people have read this poste. EIEIO is the only "practitioner" that's sent me a review. Please don't be shy, if you use a product(s) on a regular basis, and like or don't like it send me an e-mail... please. The more responses I receive the more credible the sampling, and effective the review. Thank you, Barry. p.s. I'm not including your name in the review.

you cannot judge how many people have actually read a post by the number displayed.
Because all the spiders, bots etc are counted & displayed as viewed by as well,  Just like everything else that  crawls the site so maybe only 10 real people have actually looked at the posting..
