Difference between Hawk 226vs and ULTRA 226vs?
« on: November 30, 2013, 06:45:23 pm »
Can anyone tell me the difference between the Hawk 226vs and the ULTRA 226vs?  There is an ad on Craigslist with a Hawk 226vs (no mention of Ultra) for $600.  I know nothing about the Hawks other than they are a top of the line saw.  If it makes any difference, this one appears to have the BLACK air hose which apparently means it's a newer saw than the ones with a CLEAR air hose.  A picture of the serial number appears to be 38.  I don't know if that is a valid serial number or not...there is some glare on the number in the picture.

Or would I be better off getting the 16" Excalibur new for a few bux less?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I can't tell you the difference, but I have a 226vs and love it.  It is my 2nd Hawk as I used to have a 16 inch model.  Combine that saw with Flying dutchman blades (and the occasional Olsen PGT for thick projects) and there isn't much you can't do.  $600 doesn't sound like a bad price either, but if its on Cl you can likely talk them down some to.

Thanks for the info Bill!  I missed that one.  He sold it.  But I'm watching one on eBay right now...brand new with many extras and "free shipping."  It has a buy it now price of $895.  I may make an offer and see what happens.

Well, here's what happened.  A guy about 100 miles from me answered my ad on Craigslist that I was looking for a GOOD scroll saw.  He has a Hawk 226-VS with the accessory shelf, magnifying light, couple of blade holders and wheels on the rear legs.  He wanted $650...I offered him $575...we settled on $600.  He said he bought it from a couple who used it very little and had to quit due to health reasons and all he has done with it is made a couple of test cuts.  So I guess I will find out for sure when I go pick it up sometime this week.  I hope I did OK.  It is surely a better saw than my current Craftsman 16" I bought many years ago.  Although I have to admit for a cheapie the Craftsman that I have is really not that bad of a saw!  It was my VERY FIRST purchase of a woodworking tool and now I have a whole shop full of tools!   I think I may give it to my son-in-law.

Sounds like things worked out well for you!  I am sure you will enjoy it!  The manuals can be found online, but if you have any trouble, let me know and I will email you a pdf.
