BB Ply
« on: June 29, 2013, 12:41:22 am »
I was in Menard's this week in the plywood aisle. Up on a top rack they had a sign for 1/4" Baltic Birch Plywood, with a description like it was the real thing. It was a 4'x8' sheet selling for $19.

Does anyone know if this is really BB Ply or if they just used the name? I understood all BB Ply was in 5'x5' sheets, but maybe Manards is big enough to get it made full sized.

Sometime in the past 6 months I read in one of the trade magazines that there were some manufactures starting to make BB ply is 4 X 8 sheets.  Look at the layers in BB and then some other ply ( Oak from HD or Lowes) and you will readily see the difference. Then you can compare it to what is labeled BB.

We can only get Birch ply here 8' x 4' sheets, it's not bad quality (no voids) but it's not true BB ply, I just bought 2 sheets of 4mm and it cost me ?67.00 , I wish we could get it for $19. It just shows how much we get ripped off here in the U.K.

Yes your costs seems to be much higher in a lot of things over there - that's a shame. Today in Ohio I pay $0.10/kWh (about ?0.066/kWh) for electrical energy, and $3.37/gal (?0.95/liter) for regular gasoline. How does your cost compare?

Our electric varies depending on which supplier and what area you are in, ours is 14.12pence per kWh, plus they hit you with a 16.45 pence per day standing charge.  Our petrol (gas I think you call it )  is now £1.32 per litre out of which 68% is government Tax.
So yep, the government here is scr***ng us every way it can.

It is close to the real thing. I have used it many times. The quality isn't quite as good as what I get from the lumber yard in a 5'x5' but is close enough most of the time.
It is really nice in the thicker thicknesses. 1/2" and 3/4" are awesome, the 1/4" is the stuff that isn't quite as good.

This is a tangent from BB Ply, but it looks like:

In the US we have Federal and State gasoline tax. In Ohio they total 0.464 USD/gal =  0.122 USD/Liter. If we figure the base fuel cost is the same around the world at 0.88-0.12 = 0.76 USD/L, then the penalty for each location looks like:
per Liter   USD/Liter   Local Tax   % Tax
USA    0.88             $0.88   $0.12   13.6%
AU    1.50             $1.37   $0.61   44.5%
NZ    2.05             $1.60   $0.84   52.5%
GB    1.32             $2.01   $1.25   62.2% Keith said 68%, so there is some error in my analysis.

Far from exact, but maybe representative of the level of gov't intrusion into our finances. I wonder if this really goes deeper than just gasoline (petrol). Keith said everything in GB is higher - is that the effect of import tariffs, or is it just a gov't hand in your pocket?

I think it's more of "the government hand in our pockets" (and anywhere else we can find to hide our money lol)
