Not scrolling but...
« on: June 07, 2013, 03:58:25 pm »
This is my watercolor copy of an obscure Normal Rockwell painting called "The Mermaid". I'm showing it here because of the frameless, glassless mounting. This was a fairly large painting (18"x21") and adding a mat and frame would have increased it to about 26"x30" - too big for my house.

The backing is a shallow box structure using 1/4" BB Ply as the surface and 1/2"x1" red oak for the structure. The watercolor paper is glued to the BB Ply using Acrylic Gel, and the watercolor is varnished using Krylon Kamar - UV resistant varnish meant for surfacing paintings. I reduced it to 16"x19" by trimming some sky and earth around the edges.

This mounting saves a lot of space, weight, and cost. I have not tried it with any scroll cuts, but it might make a nice contrast mounting.

I like it.  Way to think on the box :)  Seriously though that would make a neat intarsia project.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Agreed - I'd love to see an intarsia of this picture.

I love this project.  My making skills are non-existant and without a tablesaw I don't suppose I'll be making any frames in the near future.  I think I might be able to pull this idea off without a tablesaw (I'm afraid of tablesaws anyway!).  I'll have to find just the right project to use with this great idea of yours.  Thanks for sharing!

This frame work could be cut on the scroll saw. I had some 1" red oak so I ripped it to 1/2" strips on the table saw, but if you started with a 1/2 or 1/4 board you could scroll cut the back parts and maybe add some fretwork into them as well, or maybe some Celtic knot work. That might look pretty slick. I may try that on my next project.

If you back your portraits with BB Ply anyway, this frame could be the black painted backboard and the sides could also be BB Ply. The point was that it saves the size and weight of a conventional frame and makes the cutting stand off from the wall a little.
