wooden knife sheath?
« on: May 21, 2013, 09:51:55 pm »
Have any of you seen a method for design and build of a fixed-blade knife sheath in wood? I've seen methods with leather and the thermoplastic materials, but they generally include forming the material to the blade/handle. Lots of sheaths are made from rigid plastics, so maybe a rigid wood structure would work as well? Maybe a wood that matches the handle material?

Thanks for the help.

That's exactly what I was looking for. This guy looks like a perfectionist.
Thanks.

You could trace the knife shape on two halves of wood and then cut the shape at an angle so it pops out and then glue both in the outward position and then glue them together.

Food for thought.

thanks all. One of my new knives is a boot knife with a purpleheart handle. I can't find a belt sheath for it, and didn;t want to start learning leathercraft. I was thinking of cutting 3 slices of purpleheart (to match the handle), cutting the outline of the blade on the center slice, then gluing it all back together. The video above shows use of some fleece to line the internals. I'm not sure that the blade point wouldn't snag on the fleece, but it looked like a good idea. I was hoping for a way to connect the sheath to a belt and to secure the knife from sliding out (connect the knife to the sheath). Still looking at those.

A second knife is a filet knife with 7" long blade (12" overall) with east indian rosewood handles. Also no sheath yet.

I may try to prototype them with 1/8" and 1/4" BB Ply rather than waste the purpleheart or rosewood. If I get something that looks good, I'll post it.

That's one pretty sheath.    EIEIO, can you post some pictures of your knives.  I'd like to see them.

Here are some knives...

The filet and one other skinner (not in the picture) were the knives I needed a sheath for.

Ray, those are terrific looking knives.    I'd definitely like to hear more about how you made these.     Everything you make is really superb.

Steve took care of my issue.
