My HVAC Saga

Long story..   About 5 years ago my Ex-Wife and I parted ways.    She left me with the house which needed pretty much EVERYTHING...

2 years ago, I had all new HVAC system put in.  My unit is both Air Conditioner and Heat combined.   It cost $7,000 installed...    About a month ago, it died...   The repair man came and said that my Evaporative Coil prematurely failed.   Estimated repair cost was $1500, but since the part was still under warranty, they quoted me $875...   I was quite unhappy, but had little choice but pay them since our summers are pretty bad here in Central North Carolina.

It took 3 weeks for the part to arrive.  2 men put it in, pressure tested the system and refilled the coolant in about 5 hours time.   Was great having cold air blowing through my vents again.   Fortunately, I had a couple working window AC units in storage, so we didn't suffer too badly while waiting for the parts.

So, $875 and 3 days later my AC is blowing Hot Air again.   By the way, it's a Goodman HVAC system which is supposed to be a pretty reputable brand.   The repair man came back out today and found a new leak at the opposite end of the unit.   I asked him, so, does this mean that you charged me nearly 900 bucks to replace the wrong part.  He swore up and down that he personally tested it and found the evaporative coil was leaking.

They didn't charge me for the visit (Good thing since I would have hurt someone if they even hinted that there would be more charges)..  So far, it's running and the air is cold...   Knock on wood that it holds up..    I told the repair man that I hope not to see him for a very long time now.

By the way, Goodman has a class action suit against them.  Seems a lot of people bought Air Conditioners with faulty Evaporative coils.   Boy, I hope they get me a few bucks back as part of the Class Action.    I swear, new appliances are all Junk.   I bought a new Dish washer 2 weeks ago, and the silly thing simply will not dry my dishes...

Hi IBMer:
I feel your pain and have to agree with you 100% about new appliances.
The older appliances were much easier to care for and repair when something did happen to them.
Good luck with the action suit
