Snapping Blades
« on: February 15, 2013, 09:34:01 pm »
Haven't ordered any blades yet, still working thru the pile that came with the used saw.

They are pinned box store blades but work for learning.

I snapped a few so far, all at the top where the teeth begin. I bent a few learning  bottom feeding on some word art. I think that was the problem there but some weren't bent and broke. Too much tension?

Learning to love the saw. Took a few days to slow down and let it work but now the more relaxed pace is refreshing. Figured out some of the tutorials speed up the cutting part to save time, real feed rate varies from hot knife thru butter to plastic knife thru stone.

Only you know for sure,But ,too little tention will cause more problems then too much .and cause breakage and feed and cut control problems .Old blades ,another quandry ,the history of which we can only guess ,may not be proper for the purpose you are attempting ,check w/Mike at fd ,he can reccomend proper blades for your purpose .Yours  maybe dull or just wrong, best guess from info provided.

You're pushing too hard! Let the blade do the work. It's a scroll saw not a table saw. :) Slow and steady is the rule, scrolling is a race won by the Tortoise not the Hare. It took me six months to figure that out, haven't broke a blade since!

Triple B is absolutely right.  Chances are you are pushing too hard.  I rarely break a blade.  It also could be cheap blades.  When you are ready, order some good blades from FD Mike.  The difference will amaze you.

Pinned blades usually break if you are making tight turns and the reason is they are to big, if you can use pin less blades give them a go you will be surprised

Pinless is the way to go, steve has a software download on his blog site that has sound of what a good tension is on a blade. I used it and stopped breaking blades, alot of mine was too little tension afraid of breaking them when getting to tight on tension, also the blade should flex sideways about 1/8 of a inch if set right.
