best source of thin woods (shipping to MI)?
« on: December 05, 2012, 03:32:25 pm »
Does anyone have a recommendation for where I could order some woods to get started? Going to the big box stores is difficult for me (30 something woman toting two young children with her, I either get ignored or treated like I have no idea what I'm doing and am incapable of even carrying a small piece of wood... plus the kids are bored to tears with my looking over wood). I'd rather spend some on shipping and get to stay home :)

Also, for practicing and learning what would you recommend... poplar?

Thank you so much!

looking at Ocooch Hardwoods, would you recommend Poplar or Baltic Birch for starting with?

Candi, I would purchase Baltic Birch plywood. It is easy to cut and you will not get voids. I usually order the 1/8" and 1/4" and the 1/2" in 12" x 12" from Ocooch. You will find that most anything can be cut from this wood. Now, as you get more adventurous, you may want to get some maple, walnut, cherry, etc., etc. You will notice real quick that the Balic Birch is far superior to the birch you get at local hardware stores, it is well worth paying for the shipping! Now, this is just my opinion, and I have only been scrolling since March; so, there are a good many others here with more experience who can give you expert advice. Happy Scrolling!

Hi Candi,  Mi. huh!

I'm in the U.P. and Menards is a two hour drive....Ugh!

I have ordered from Sloan's in Tenn, they are very good.  I just recently ordered from Ocooch, wood is not here yet but I got an e-mail with a tracking number so it is on it's way.  Shipping was 11.00 which kind of took me by surprise until I thought exactly what it would cost me in gas and I figured it was well worth it.  Most of the scrollers here buy from both places and are happy with the service and wood.

Home Depot currently has project pieces for a nice price. They have 1/4, 1/2 inch thick pcs. of poplar, check the lumber department there. I started with 3/4 pine from Menards.
GO PACK GO

I have bought from Ocooch Hardwoods and had good luck.
Has anybody bought from thinboards.com?

Yes, I get quite a lot of 1/4" red oak from Thinboards and always get what I order. I have looked for better prices to no avail.
