Dewalt Air Blower Broken
« on: November 18, 2012, 07:21:28 pm »
Yesterday while waxing the table on my Dewalt 788, I lifted the air blower up and heard a small "crack".  The blower arm them flopped and would not stay in place any longer/  The first knuckle was broken and so loose it would not stay on.  I removed that knuckle and I cannot get the second knuckle to go on the ball type flange that holds it.  The pictures in the parts diagram do not show the ball but rather a straight connector and it looks like the air nozzle has some kind of nut that would lock it down?   The bellows is working fine.Anyone had experience with this.  Pictures show parts diagram and my parts

Try heating the plastic in hot water

Looks to me like the diagram is wrong. Do as tbolt says, put the end of the air blower hose in some hot water to soften it, then install it onto the ball of the fitting. as soon as it cools, it will shrink on to the ball. Then order a new hose because the one you have is to short now.

I had the same problem. I used a light oil and just pushed it hard enough that it finally popped on. I didn't think about heat!? DOH!  ::) :P :-[  I'm sure heat would have helped a lot more.
You might also consider using a heat gun or hair dryer, just don't get it too hot and melt it!  :o >:( ;)

I had same thing happen. Used a pot of boiling water to heat the first remaining 'cone' and still had a tough time forcing that sucker on the nipple.
Once repaired it was and still remains fine. No appreciable loss in length and the fit is holding the 'hose' in place just fine.
Using oil would seem to make the hose too loose to hold in place properly.

Well the air blower is back on, at least for now.  Like GB, that sucker was difficult at best. I  finally removed the bottom flange with the nipple and screwed it to the work bench.  That way I was able to get enough leverage to push it back on. also put a drop of CRC 656. It was still very hard to get it back on. It is working fine for now though.  I use it mainly as a support system for the plastic tube coming from my air pump. The bellows system just does not produce enough air to suit me.  I wish to thank the Brain Trust for the great advice.  Once again you folks  were super.

There is a tool available for assembling modular tubing, here's the link: http://www.modularhose.com/Loc-Line-14-System/14-miscellaneous I use these at work, MUCH easier than assembling with out it. Might not be worth if for a one time use though.
