I am putting a finish on my first intarsia using tung oil. I put on a coat of sealer first but it seems the oil is just soaking into the wood. Am i just being impatient or should keep adding oil? Any suggestion?

Hello friend. Tung oil will just continue to soak into the wood. It is not a high build finish like poly or lacquer. Tung oil gives a soft hand rubbed look.

It varies with different woods.  Softwoods like cedar will soak it up a lot where hardwoods like oak will need less coats.  I use an acrylic spray I get at Walmart to finish my intarsia pieces.  Yes you can spray it over dried tung oil or dried lacquer.

I don't use Tung oil on my Intarsias. I put on about five layers of Deft, Satin spray and they turn out just the way I like them.

Thank you for all the responses, is the Deft satin spray sold at home depot, lowes or wal-mart? I'm not familiar with it but I really like the lhe looks. I'll look on the net. Thanks again.

You can get Deft Satin spray at both Lowe's and Home depot.  I've never tried finding it at wal-mart.

Deft has a Poly spray out now, but I've never tried it yet. The Deft I use is in a Blue and White can and it's called Clear Wood Finish, Satin. It's a clear Lacquer that doesn't turn White woods yellow. You can re-coat in a half hour, so putting on multi coats goes fast.

I always do two or three coats of wipe on urethane, about 8 hours in between coats, then 3 to 5 coats of a thick glaze spray, the urethane brings out the rich color in the wood, and the spray gives it a reflective glass like feel and look.  Hope this helps
