All three of my children are well trained in firearm safety and so are their children!

I insisted on it and it was required learning in our house.

No relative of mine will ever be harmed by the so called "unloaded gun"!
They all know how to check the firearms for safety!

I never really wanted to grow up....All I wanted was to be able to reach the cookie jar...and play with my DW 788

I grew up around all sorts of firearms mostly long guns until I reached my teens then I was given my first hand gun and I was bitten. Hand guns are COOL. I even made a mistake in my youth and shot myself in the leg like so many others. Fortunately it was with a 22 if I had done it with the Ruger Blackhawk I later purchased I would have blown my leg off. Needless to say I learned my lesson in gun safety. I have passed along the information to many folks I've taught to shoot safely.

I made a couple of mistakes that resulted in the bullet in my leg.

First, the holster didn't fit the gun properly, the holster was an open one that let the barrel protrude a couple inches beyond the holster which had been made for a shorter gun.

Second, I was attempting to make a "fast" draw with thumb on the hammer and finger on the trigger, I started the draw with the hammer being pulled to the cocked position and

Third, The front sight caught on the front of the holster and caused my finger to depress the trigger. BOOM and Gabby hit the dirt, the bullet hit my knee and knocked my leg out from under me.

If you have ever had someone sneak up behind you and bump the back of your knee you know how it makes your leg buckle. Well imagine the force equal to a mule's kick!

Well that's my lesson on how NOT to shoot a single action six shooter.
Let that be a lesson to you whippersnappers.  ;D
