I have performed clocks, based plywood occupy 1/4 ".
But I control printing on quality stickable images with good resolution.
But I hit the image on the previously sanded plywood and cut the figure, then put the mechanism and finally placed them a base, put a good layer of transparent varnish and ready, are as in 3d.

Now if you want to be round, cutting plotters are as you indicate, but you need to find anyone with a cutter of those, who occupy labeled on vinyl, I think that with a small extra cost you can cut round the image will be perfect, because it is computerized cutting.
