Depends on where you live.  Here in the USA you don't need a special license as long as it is not a Business, then sales tax comes in to play.  Donations are pretty much accepted everywhere.

Sometimes you have to be careful about cancer research logos. I think that pink ribbons are copyrighted by the Susan G Coleman group. I don't remember all the details but I also seem to remember a news article where they sued a group of kids for using "for a cure" in some type of fundraiser. (I apologize for not remembering all of the facts)

alot of groups hold slient auctions and look for donations so that might be another way to donate.

Newfie,

Just a suggestion, but take a look at www.woodworkersfightingcancer.com.  It is a website sponsored by Marc Spagnuolo, the wood whisperer.  I participated in a project he held last year where we built rocking horses and donations were made.  I made a couple extras and sent the proceeds in as a cash donation as well.  The project last year forwarded the proceeds to the Livestrong foundation.  It is just one way to go, but it might suit your needs.

Todd I recommend that you contact the Cancer Research Foundation or Cancer Society and tell them your plans. People have ended up in the news as not being officially sanctioned by the Cancer Society while fundraising.
