Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Squaring up corners and seamless joinery
« on: December 11, 2013, 09:54:38 am »
Greets all,

I have a few questions that I need some guidance on. First off, I only have limited access to some tools, but it should be more than enough. I have a table saw, scroll saw, blade runner, compound mitre saw and then hand sanders; alas no planer yet.

I saw no Steve's pattern page that he has a box type hummingbird mantel clock. http://www.stevedgood.com/thehummer.pdf for your reference. In the photos, his joints seem to be almost seamless. I have made a few clocks in that style, but I have yet to figure out how to make the joints appear seamless.

I have ensured my blanks are 100% square, at least to the naked eye and carpenter's squares. I am using 1/2" wood vice 1/4" as prescribed in the pattern, but it shouldn't really matter.  I am using a table saw with an 80 tooth blade to ensure everything is "joint ready" and a good solid fence. I do not have a crosscut sled though, maybe an issue?

Anyone have any pointers?

Thanks

Mine downloaded just fine with no warnings. One questions though. His plans call for A4 paper and are all in metric dimensions. Any idea if this will turn out if i print it on 8.5x11?

Thanks

One of my team mates for a college class assisting in writing a 50 page paper told me yesterday that he had drop the class and would not be able to participate in the project.  Well it's due on Weds of this week, so I'm still hoping for an April Fools email /crosses fingers.

Pattern Requests. / Re: New Patterns?

Steve,

I really enjoy your patterns and i have cut a few of them.  I also really enjoy your tutorials using Corel, but unfortunately I seem to be lacking in the creativity department.  Here is an idea I've been struggling with for a pattern, maybe you can use the idea in a pattern design.

How about something for Mother's Day?  A picture frame of some sort for a 5x7 to put a picture of the kids into.  The display area being that of a heart or other spring/mothers day type shape.  Lettering around the display area stating World's Best Mom, Happy Mother's Day, We Love You, or something along those lines, along with some decorative floral or victorian type fretwork on the between the Border of the frame and the display area.  If you don't like that, can you point me in the direction of a mothers day picture frame or something? I haven't been able to find much on-line for patterns and I'd like to make something for the wife for the day.

Thanks again,

Jeremy

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Looking into buying a router table?

If you go onto youtube, there are 100's of videos of router tables that people have made just simply out of some wood stock they've had around the shop.  I'll be building one in the next few weeks and saving close to 100 bucks from a pre-made one.

I'm a 10 year submarine vet myself.  I worked on the SSBN's and unfortunately never got to see an SSGN upclose.  However, I thought it was really neat when the SSGN surfaced and took the SEAL on-board.  It was a real thrill to see what I had heard about in the fleet from some of my younger sailors and students while I was an instructor in KBay.

Thanks again guys.  I've tried WoodCraft in Roswell, and also another one on Jimmy Carter in Roswell/Norcross called Peachtree wood supply or something today.  Eventhough WoodCraft has a great selection of lumber for building, carving and the like I didn't see to much dedicated for scrolling.  Overall I thought it was a fun store to look through.  Way too many fun projects that I'd love to get into, but atm just don't have the time.

Thanks guys.  I appreciate it :)  I've cut a few different type 1/4 plaques with just regular single side sanded from Home Depot.  It worked fairly well, however the blue tape seems to occasionally pull the top part off of thinly cut parts.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Atlanta, GA Wood Supply?

Does anyone know where to get a good selection of Scrollable Wood in the NE Atlanta/Athens GA area?  I have found a sparse selection of BB Ply which is running about 4.00 for a 12x12x1/4.  I've looked online and see that most of it runs decently priced, but I'd pay an additional 50% in shipping.  Any help would be great, thanks.

Thanks for the info.  I have never used it, but did pick up the minwax brand the other day at homedepot and I'm looking forward to trying it.  Unfortunately, I ran into the problem with my detail work that the blue tape was actually lifting the first layer of wood off of the 1/4 ply that I was working with.  So I'll probably not be using blue tape again when I work with ply.  I'm hoping I can sand the project fairly well and the missing wood areas give a neat highlight look.  However, after 3-4 hours of working on the project I was fairly unimpressed with the result because of the wood lifting :(  Oh well, there is alway paint ;)

Will do thanks.  The college logo is for the University of North Dakota, which recently lost it's Fighting Sioux Logo, so I'm doing a Sioux Logo.  Their colors are green & White, or Green and Black, so I figure if the stain doesn't look that great, there is always paint :)

Aye a lot lighter in some, and very dark in others.  I could try to restain it, but it seemed that part of the wood "Super Absorbed" in parts and other parts were resistant to the stain.  I bought some pre-stain treatment I might try on a piece of scrap to see if it helps.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm looking for something similar to what you described.  I'm working on a college logo in Sanded 1/4 Ply in which I'm going to stain a light maple, or paint white.  I haven't decided yet lol.  I stained 1 piece I did in 1/4 ply, but the stain came out all blotchy :(
