Computer questions / Re: how to fix windows 10
« on: October 11, 2015, 12:53:37 am »
I've actually been enjoying Windows 10. I've had very few problems and have been running it for nearly a year on the Microsoft insider program which means I've had test builds galore as they come out on the fast ring. There were some pretty buggy version prior to February! I'm still getting the test builds as they roll out even now. Just got a new one last week as a matter of fact. So far, on a laptop, a desktop and a tablet, Things are really smooth and much better than windows 8.

Just wanted to share something cool. The Charles Dearing deer in a live edge maple slab that I posted here last year made it into the gallery of Fall issue of ScrollSaw Woodworking magazine!!

I was shocked when I saw it in the issue I got in the mail today  8)

Intarsia / Re: To back or not to back
« on: January 19, 2015, 02:32:33 pm »
Definitely a backer for me!

In addition to strength, it can help with warping over time. I usually leave the backer 1/4 inch from the edge on larger pieces or 1/8" on smaller ones.

One other note. For me, I don't skimp on the backer for nice intarsia. I figure that if I'm using exotic and often expensive woods for color and grain and putting all the time in to create a piece of art, I won't use cheap luan for the back. I usually use nice baltic birch. I also sand and give it a light coat of satin lacquer to the back of the piece.

A big problem these days is laser and CNC cut wood.

I really don't sell my work, only occasionally when someone that's seen one of my pieces asks me to make something. One time I was asked about making a Charles Dearing horse portrait that someone saw I had made before. I gave them a price of $65 which is cheap for the hours of cutting. She was a little stunned on the price and said that they had seen "fancy cut wood" cheaper at some store that even had "engraving"

My response was that the difference in what I do is similar to buying a painting versus buying something that came out of a printer after someone pressed the enter key on their computer.

I didn't end up doing the horse for her, but she did get the point.

People either understand craftsmanship or they don't and the ones that do will pay for that.

I often get lazy and don't wear goggles when spraying  :o

I'm lucky though that the little paint dots don't seem to stick permanently to my plastic lens glasses. I did have the glasses coated with a couple of things when I bought them so I'm guessing that's why. A damp microfiber towel and paint or lacquer wipes right off.

Happy Thanksgiving to all here at SW! We're getting up to a foot of snow here today, but tomorrow should be nice while we travel to family about 5 1/2 hours away.

I don't have a picture, but a few years ago I experimented with the angle cut letters. It can make some cool effects. Sort of like the beveled engraving on a cemetery head stone. Bab example, but I can't think of a better one at the moment. If I get a chance, I'll cut a quick example after Thanksgiving and post it. Done right, it can look pretty cool. At least the ones I did before did anyway. Hope I can remember the way I finally came up with LOL
