Hi Andy...

I am in fact in Canada - Quebec to be more specific.  Unfortunately I don't have a Castle Building Supply or a Windsor Plywood store around here.  I really don't have many choices.  Rona, Reno Depot, Home Depot are the only places I have to shop at.  None of these places have Baltic birch.  I can get regular plywood that is finished on one side but only in birch, maple and oak.  And 1/4" is nonexistent.  And so I use this type of plywood - 1/2" - 3/4" - and hope for the best.

I have a guy who makes hardwood flooring.  I get all my hardwood from him dirt cheap.  It does mean that I have to mill the wood down to size on the jointer and planer but this is a small price to pay considering the cost of the wood.

Thanks for the opinions guys... very much appreciated.

Judging by what most are saying I think that I'll stick with the FD UR blades.  As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke why fix it?  FD UR is the only blade I've ever used and they seem to be working well for me.  I think I'm over the learning curve.

Don... you raise a good point pertaining to the cost/exchange.  I didn't really look closely at the Pegas blade and shipping costs.  In the past I've been ordering from Mike's workshop and will continue doing so.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Change of Blade Type?
« on: November 10, 2019, 01:18:49 pm »
Hi all...

Technically, I am a long time scroller seeing as I've had my DeWalt 788 for more than seven years.  In real life I'm pretty much a newbie.
When I bought my saw I managed to do a couple of patterns.  But shortly after that, a lot of changes were happening in my life that kept me away from the saw - parents passing away within 5 years of each other.  And a total of five foot surgeries within two years.  And so all of this kept me away from the saw.  But I'm happy to report that life has started to level out and I now am back at it.

Back when I first got my saw, Flying Dutchman seemed to be everyone's choice of blades.  I now see that Pegas blades are popular.  Is there really a lot of difference between FD and Pegas.  Should I be making the change?

My go to blade has been the FD Ultra Reverse #5.  I also use the UR #3 for smaller intricate cuts.  I love cutting fretwork projects.  If I were advised to make the change over to Pegas blades, which ones would be similar to the FD's that I'm using now?  Or is there another type that would be even better for me?  I'm beginning to get low on blades and will be making an order very soon and am in need of some guidance towards what I should be getting.  Most of my projects are done with 1/2 birch or 1/2" plywood on occasion.  But mostly birch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oscar,

Information in this link should answer your questions on Baltic Birch Plywood.  To get the 1/8 and 1/4 size here, I have to order it in.

Thanks so much for this Larry... very much appreciated.  Now that I understand what Baltic birch is, I can say for sure that I can't get it around here.  I did notice that I can get it from Amazon.  As I said, I can get veneer plywood - oak, maple and birch but it isn't as good as Baltic birch.  And, I have my vast supply of hardwood which I use most often.  Perhaps when I start getting low on what I have now I'll give Baltic birch a try.  I did notice that it's quite pricey.

Thanks again!!!

I'm a complete newb who has been reading a lot of guys using "Baltic Birch" for most of their projects.  I'm just wondering - is Baltic birch actually plywood that is finished on one side or is it a solid piece of wood?  I do know that there's no such thing called Baltic birch around here.  In fact, the only hardwood I can get is birch, oak, maple and pine.  But I can get plywood that's finished on one side, be it oak, birch or maple.

But for most of my projects I prefer to use birch.  I get lots of hardwood from a guy who's business is making hardwood flooring.  The wood is rough meaning that I have to mill it down on the jointer and planer.  I certainly don't mind doing this because I get it dirt cheap so the extra work is well worth it.

So I'm just wondering... is the birch I'm using actually equivalent to "Baltic" birch or is what you speak of actually plywood?

Thanks so much

Pattern Requests. / Re: New Rule For Posting Photos For Pattern Makers
« on: November 07, 2019, 06:49:08 pm »
Oh my... I just did this very thing earlier today.  So sorry...

In my own defense, I'm really new here and didn't read the rules... my bad... and I know... that's a really lame excuse. :(
I actually posted the picture out of desperation as I promised my sister that I would make one for her.  My problem is that I cannot find the pattern I used to make the one in the picture.

You can be sure that I won't put any pictures up again.

Pattern Requests. / I Lost This Pattern
« on: November 07, 2019, 01:15:36 pm »
Greetings all...

I somehow lost the pattern that I used for this project.  I was sure that I had it downloaded but I've checked my whole collection and cannot find it.
I've also checked Steve's catalog and haven't seen it there either.  I'm almost positive that this is one of Steve's patterns but just to make sure I checked my account over at Sue's site and it's nowhere to be found there either.

My sister saw this and has put in a request for me to make her one.

Perhaps someone out there has seen this pattern somewhere and can point it out to me?
It would be so much appreciated.

I had this very situation just yesterday.  I cured it by using the magnifying glass on my LED light.
