General Scroll Saw Talk / Scroller

You know, it's pretty crappy how Scroller Limited thinks they can just go to some of the top scroll saw pattern designers sites and basically copy any pattern they think will be popular. From Sheila Bergner-Landry, the keys, Keith Fenton, the angel ornaments and ornate ornament set, and from Sue Mey the snow globes.

I've been in this industry for close to 20 years and I can say that with in the last few years it seems like no one takes into consideration respect that is due to designers any more. We have some great talent that is going to eventually quit designing patterns for us to purchase if we aren't careful. Sure, free patterns are great, but they still lack so much 90% of the time.  Yes, I realize that the designers don't own a "concept", but what happened to all the respect that there used to be.

This isn't to even bringing up all the illegally downloaded patterns that people do. That's another rant for another day.

I can tell you one thing Scroller Limited will not ever get a penny of my money.

Personally I do not use my shop vac or dust collector on my scroll saw. I just haven't taken the time to build a port for it. The main thing I use my collector for would be the planer and bandsaw. I also use it on my table saw and sometimes miter saw. Sound wise it's quieter than my older shop vac and maybe a bit more noisy than my smaller newer one. I don't know how much more expensive the dc is than the shop vac because their use is such a small part. I figure, my bandsaw uses more power than both.  If you can get it at a good price I would. It saves so much time on clean up!

http://www.ocoochhardwoods.com Would be a good one.  I haven't ordered anything since some new owners took over, but I'm sure they are still good to deal with!  They aren't in Ohio though.  And this one right here is in Ohio!  http://www.kencraftcompany.com.  I have heard some good things from them.  And they might be able to go there locally and save shipping!

Luckily my shop is also in the basement so the ALabama heat hasn't kept me out of there.  But work has!  I am finally glad the schools are back in session here and my job hours will be cut! (I'm an assistant manager at the local movie theater!)  Now with things slowing down, I plan on making some things for a show in December and some gifts and playing more with the bandsaw I got last month!

I'm a little late, since you already decided to buy one, but I just got the band saw less than a month ago.  It is great.  I have finally got everything just the way it needs to be.  Getting the table square both ways to the blade was a pain.  But well worth it.  I've resawn a piece of 8" wide oak on it and it didn't have any problems at all!  I got some 1/2 timberwolf blades and they are SO MUCH better than the stock blade for resawing.  I wold suggest you get one asap!

Thanks, Danny.  I have used Sloan's for years!  Their wood is great and service is even better.  I have been buying my BB from Woodcraft in Pelham the last few months though.  Its easier to drive there and pick up a 30x60 sheet than ordering and having to wait on the post man!  I have been looking for months trying to find some one in northern or central Alabama that sells full sheets of 1/8".  I have found places that ell 1/4" and up but not 1/8"!  The other day I happened by a site that sold it in full sheets.  they are located in Chattanooga.  Its only about 2 hours away and its is only $16 for a 5x5' sheet!  I think I will be going there from now on unless I am in a hurry.  I have 3 full sheets waiting at home now and I still have some pieces from Woodcraft to use.  I think I am set for most of the christmas cutting!

Hey Danny,

I used to have a shop out back when I was younger at my parents house.  It was a building that I built...I was probably 11 or 12.  So you can imagine how well it was built.  It held up nicely and I learned to scroll out there.  It got REALLY hot in the summer.  An old tin building with no insulation.  Then as I got older I got some insulation and it helped....a little...very little!  In the winter it was cold too..and the heat from the heaters escaped threw some of the "vents" from the summer...holes!  LOL.  Now I am lucky enough to have the shop in my house's basement.  It stays fairly cool down there all summer and I do have a couple fans that I use to blow the air around.  Its great being able to have all my tools so close and all I have to do is walk down a few steps to get to them!  But, I feel your pain about the heat!  Gotta love Alabama summers!  NOT!

Those look awesome!  I cut those out and used 1/8" maple and cherry and a couple layers of baltic birch.  I must say the hardwood looks the best, but I sold the BB versions first!

Hi all,

I just wanted to share a quick story of customer service!  I have had my excalibur since 2006 and on Thursday it started acting funny.  It had more vibration than any other time.  I have always had a little, a very little, because of my stand.  Not enough to worry about, thats for sure.  I went and e mailed Seyco that night because I had Christmas orders as well as gifts I need to make.  I got a email on Friday saying what I would need to do before I call Ray(the owner of the company) back to try to fix the problem.  I didn't have a chance to get to call him on Friday due to work.  Before I went to work though I tried my saw out again.  It worked fine.  Like nothing had ever happened to it!  I have no idea what my issue was.  On Thursday before I even emailed Ray I vacuumed all the dust to be sure there wasn't a small piece of wood that might be in the way of the arm, and I also changed the blade and tension on the blade to see if that might be had been the issue.  I emailed Ray back to tell him that is was working fine.  He also said that if he needed to call me on Saturday he would to fix the problem.  They aren't open on Saturdays so that is GREAT customer service.  My saw is working like it always has and I know he will be there if the issue arises again.  Hopefully I will not need him, but I know he is there if I do!  Before I even emailed him, I had decided if it couldn't be fixed and I had to get a new saw, it would defiantly be another Excalibur.  They are the best saw out there and so is Seyco!

Well, after I turn the lights on  I walk over and flip the 6 plug thing and turn on another light and the radio!  If nothing is good on the radio I sometimes use my iPhone.  Then have to decide which way I wanna go that day!

I love those!  I have made some too.  I used BB and I have also used some solid woods.  I plan on making a lot of them for a show I have coming up in less than a month. (Oh crap, I better get busy!)  I see you are a Alabama fan, I live in Cullman!

Hi Marg,

IT could be the ex moves along a lot faster than the DeWalt.  More power! You may have to retrain yourself to use a little more pressure than you were used to.  I came from a DeWalt to the Excalibur, but I don't remember experiencing any extra bounce.  But it was almost 7 years ago that I got my excal!
