General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: a new tool in the workshop
« on: July 13, 2017, 08:00:56 am »
I keep a magnetic pick up tool on almost all of my equipment.  One of the collapsible ones - like a pen.  Usually the things I drop like scrollsaw blades and drill bits are light enough to pick up with one of those.

It also depends on where you are selling.  Things I sold in my booth went for far less if I had them on consignment somewhere.  My crosses and angels were sold at a Christian Book store, Spiral Bowls, oven rack pushers, etc. were at a gormet shop and a lot of my stuff was at a gallery were a lot of wood workers had stuff to sell.  For instance, a puzzle of a dog of a certain breed went for $10.00 in my booth.  That same puzzle went for $25.00 at a pet store and custom orders were common.  Portraits of John Wayne, Indians, Clint Eastwood etc go very well at Rustic Furniture stores here in Texas.  Also, the type of venue makes a difference.  The local festival or church booth brings in less that a really large show (where the booth rental is ridiculous).

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blades
« on: June 03, 2017, 08:06:48 am »
A #7 should have been overkill on pine.  It is my experience that there are no good pinned blades.  All the ones I have ever bought have been from various hardware stores and cut like crap.  I think you will find if you go to a better blade like Flying Dutchman or Olson, you will find them less expensive and far better to use.  They keep their edge longer and just do an overall better job.  Many people here have expressed the amazing difference once they have gone from hardware store blades to a better blade, regardless of the quality of the saw.  I have seen the most amazing pieces cut on the most basic of saws.  If your machine has the capability of using pinless blades or can be converted to use pinless blades, I highly recommend you try a different brand of blades.  Mikes workshop used to offer a variety pack of flying Dutchman blades.  Try as many as you can and you will find the blade that you are most comfortable with.  The vast majority of my cutting is with a #3 or #5 reverse tooth blade.

Hello and welcome to the forum.  I'm Julie from Texas.  I used to do demos for Home Depot on the Ryobi.  It is a very entry level saw and not the best one out there.  If you want to stay with an entry level saw, I suggest you move to a Porter Cable.  The Dewalt and the Delta are almost identical and both good saws.  I have an old EX21 that still runs great.  I haven't had my hands on the new ST21 yet.  I have a buddy that started scrolling for the same reason.  It has helped him.  Glad to have you.

I bought my first couple from RJR but I've gotten a few from Klingspor Woodworking.  Very good quality and fast delivery.  Just got a refill for my 4" 220.
