General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blade feeding
« on: November 06, 2016, 10:58:31 am »
I top feed on the elderly DeWalt. Would not want to do some of the things I like to make any other way. Here is an example. I never counted, but someone said there were over 1200 holes. Just call me crazy.
It is an old Berry Basket pattern that is not on the new owner's site.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Merchant Marine
« on: November 06, 2016, 08:07:07 am »
In WWII the Merchant Marine lost more personnel, percentage wise, than all the other forces put together.
Late in 1944, the harbor of Bari, Italy, was filled with cargo ships waiting to unload at night. The lights were on, and the Germans were informed. They got together enough planes to bomb the harbor. That event is sometimes called the second Pearl Harbor. My father's ship was tied up next to one filled with explosives. He and so many others did not come back.

Ask Steve a question. / Scrollnado question
« on: September 18, 2016, 12:34:32 pm »
Am trying to find out if the Scrollnado will fit the Excalibur 16". Amazon sent the question to the Community, and has said, today, that I probably won't get an answer. Do you want to guess?

Very sad news. Met Dirk and Karen at numerous scroll saw events. Wonderful people. As others have said, he will be missed by his family, and the scrolling community.

Did watch Steve's videos on using the clay, and the ones on InLace, too. So, plan to try again. Thank you.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Polymer clay
« on: January 20, 2014, 06:13:20 pm »
Am going to make Steve's little box, with the polymer clay in the frets. Haven't used it before, so wanted to test. Made a couple of frets in 1/4" maple. Warmed the clay, in my hands, filled, checking both sides, baked at 275? F for 15 minutes. The next day the clay slid right out.
I can't find Steve's original instructions for using it, and have done a general search for suggestions on Google. Nothing different.
Does the scrollsaw make the cuts too smooth? Can come up with a way to get it done, with a backing and glue. However, maybe I didn't do it right. Anyone?

I wouldn't spend the "riches" just yet. So many of the magazines were saved in the past, doubt there is any demand.
Another example. We had bought the Encyclopedia Britannica in 1957 and the years books until 2000. When we were getting ready for the Estate Sale, the person in charge said to put them in the dumpster. They would not sell. Have not figured out what they had cost. Doesn't matter now.
Everything is on the Internet. But, I still like the feel of holding a real book. And will admit to owning a Kindle.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Using "Painters Tape" --OR NOT-- :+}
« on: December 25, 2013, 06:21:34 pm »
There is a "delicate" version of the blue painters' tape. Ace hardware did have a purple one, but have seen it lately. It peels off easier. No heat or thinner necessary.

Branson club is disbanding. The usual, people get older, move, etc. Ten years is often the life of different kinds of clubs. Think a couple of members are or were from northern Arkansas; will see if I can get a hold of someone.

Brag Forum / Too late

Finished this too late for Halloween, but am ready for next year. It is walnut and Baltic birch ply, finished with B/O mix and Deft semi-gloss. Pat B

Brag Forum / Ornaments
« on: November 19, 2013, 11:07:17 pm »
Am making ornaments for the little craft shop here at my retirement complex. Part of the money they receive is used for charitable efforts.
There are multiples of most; they are 1/8" maple or birch, finished with Deft semi-gloss. The sleds will have runners attached. Last year the military and the dog ones sold.

Have had packing tape over the switch for maybe 10 years. Probably replaced a time or two. Never had a problem. And do make my share of sawdust! ;D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dewalt 788 type 2 quality level in 2013?
« on: November 14, 2013, 07:03:48 pm »
Last year I found a 788 on Craig's List. It was 10 years old; owner bought it and went all out on blades, patterns, etc. Used it a few times, and just didn't get the hang of it, he said. It is a type 1, made in Canada, in perfect, almost unused condition. Receipts were in among all the stuff. You might check around for an older one.
But, it is nice to hear a good report on ones made last year.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Best woods for fretwork
« on: November 13, 2013, 01:55:40 pm »
I like 1/8" maple for ornaments. Birch is working, too. Looked at the ash, but it wasn't as light colored. Have been using the light colored wood as the ornament shows up better on the green trees.
