Thanks DW.  Just to add, I am in South Africa and the cost of postage and the subsequent possible import taxes do not make it cheap to try out, and then order again.  And the long time it takes to get here too.

So, I have decided what I want, I just need help on the FD spiral blades with flat ends, vs the normal spiral blades.

Hi Everyone

I will be placing my first order for blades. I would like to know more about the various spiral blades on offer. I am not sure which will be best.

I have a bottom feeding Hegner, with the standard blade clamps. Would the spiral blades with the straight/flat ends be the best fit? I wish to embark on portrait work. I have one set of normal spirals I obtained from someone. They are not flat end and break all the time, even after just 5mins of use.

I also intend getting some ultra reverse blades fit the first time. I am excited about my purchase but nervous I may take the wrong blades and regret it.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Wood Grain

Hi

When cutting silhouettes, using plywood, in what direction should the upper layer grain be? I did a cutting with the grain going horizontal, whereas I was considering it could be vertical. Is there a rule or standard to be followed?

I have some oak ply as stock for the new direction my hobby is going.

Hi Heather

I also use that brand of blades. It is the only brand I can fine locally in Cape Town, South Africa, when available. The same happens with me. I have done the roughing up of the clamps, and it helps. I also learned it may be because of oil on the blades, so before using them, just wipe the clamped part of the blade with some alcohol spirits or so, to get rid of the oil.

As for the breaking, I am not sure about that one. After making changes to the tensions, pressures etc, I find it could even be that the breaking occurs after sharp turning. I know this is what the blades are supposed to do but I don't know what else to think.

I have a 2003 Hegner Multicut 2S

Lastly, I am looking to purchase new blades and I am not sure which exactly. I will post for comments on that.

Hi Fellow Scrollers

I am an inexperienced hobby scroller, from Cape Town, South Africa. I have a very limited space to work with wood, and searched for a hobby that would match. Needless to say, I discovered scrolling and about 20 months ago I bought a used Hegner Multicut2, single speed. 

I then started watching all the available youtube videos on scrolling.  I have made a few name plates, and name key rings, and various other starter patterns.  Now I am exploring working on portraits.

My biggest problem is obtaining scrolling resources.  There is no local presence for anything and virtually everything must be imported. This increases my costs, and makes the hobby very expensive. 

However, the fact that I am here means I am forging ahead, and trying to make the best of the situation.  I have a very stressful job, and watching the blade follow the line as I cut through wood has been very soothing and rewarding. And I get to make something, including a small heap of wood dust! What more can I ask for?
