Really nicely done plaque.  I'm sure it will be much appreciated.

I like the looks of several of them that I've seen but, agree that (unless one really lights your candle), they tend to be boring projects.

Wow, Thank you Larry.  I found the modified project I was looking for on December 21, 2018.  You saved me a tone of time searching through daily blogs.

Thanks again,
Dennis

General Scroll Saw Talk / Tree Box
« on: May 31, 2019, 10:59:48 am »
Some time ago (last 12-months I think) Steve put out a pattern (now in his catalog) titled "Tree Box."  It's a set of three boxes  mounted on a dowel so that they can rotate around the dowel with each box serving as the lid for the box below it.

A few days after Steve debuted the pattern on his blog, he published a picture of a reproduction of the project someone had done (with a couple of modifications).  One of the modifications was some kind of a 'capnut' on top of the dowel that was different than the one on Steve's pattern.  I am trying to locate the daily blog that shows that capnut modification.

So far, I have searched all of the daily blogs from January through July 2018, with no luck.  I'll keep searching but, if, by any chance, anyone  happens to have an idea about when those blogs with the 'Tree Box' pattern were published, I would appreciate some help finding it.

Thanks,
Dennis

Nice job.  That pattern is in my 'To Do' stack.  I like the thicker wood as well.

I too appreciated RD's comments - meaningful and eloquent . . .   from a historical point of view.  However, I agree with both comments above.  Again, with no offense meant towards anyone, 'Politically Correct' is baloney!  Certainly, dignity and respect should always prevail but, whatever has become of 'freedom of speech' in America.

I suspect that anyone can find a reason to be offended on any given day but, it's about time we all sucked it up a little and started remembering the old adage that "Sticks and stones may break my bones but, names will never hurt me."

I have a TV in my shop.  It's on whenever I'm in the shop.  If, as often happens, there is 'nothing on', I can always replay old ballgames or 'MASH' episodes.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Harbor Freight gems......

RE:  Foot Switch - I'm not sure why but, I resisted for a long time adding a foot switch to my scroll saw thinking that it was an unnecessary expense.  Recently however, I've done some larger projects that made reaching my on/off switch difficult, sometimes resulting in cuts being affected.  So. . .  I added a dead-man foot switch (from Harbor Freight) and WOW!  I wish I'd done that years ago.  I love the new control that I have gained on my saw.

As far as HF quality is concerned: As far as hobbyists are concerned, I think their quality is great.  Some items are a little iffy but, generally meet your needs.  For professional or heavy-duty use I'd steer clear of HF but even the pros sometimes have a rare need for a tool they don't use routinely and HF fills that gap at a reasonable price.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: need some advice on spiral blades
« on: February 14, 2019, 11:24:45 am »
I routinely use FD flat-end blades on my Hawk 220 and don't have any problem holding them.  I feed from the bottom and once the blade is in the bottom holder sometimes it takes just a very slight finger-twist of the blade to make sure it lines up perfectly for the upper holder.  I do find that it takes a very positive twist on the tightening screw (I wish it were a round knob) to make sure it doesn't slip out.  I'm currently using some Plain End Sharktooth BLDFF20 blades that are working very well with no problems.

Whenever I do have a problem with blades slipping out of the upper holder, I find that a couple of strokes on the end of the holding screw on very find sandpaper solves the problem.

I've never used a PC saw but, on my RBI Hawk I have to make sure those blades are mounted without any twist at all (top or bottom) and need a little more tension than regular blades.  Doing this, I rarely break spiral blades.

Is there a chance that your saw has a setting to tilt the blade forward as well as the setting that tilts the table?  My RBI Hawk saw has two positions to adjust the forward tilt of the blade.  One position is straight up and down and the other tilts the blade slightly forward for a more aggressive cut.  If tilted forward, rather than straight up and down, it would certainly affect how puzzle pieces fit.

Norm,
Is there a chance that you could post a picture of the one you did in mahogany?  I've done a couple of those in baltic-birch but, would be interested in seeing one done in a darker wood.
