Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / basic no frills frame making
« on: October 08, 2014, 06:42:32 pm »
This is a way to create a frame with out the use of power tools other than your scroll saw.
First decide on what size you want your frame.... in this case the frame will house an 8 x 10 picture and the frame will be 1.5 " wide and .5" thick with a .25" channel.  This means that you need to cut 2 each of the following:
12.50" x 1.50" x .25"
10.50" x 1.50" x .25"
Since I do not own a table saw I used my miter saw to cut to length and to put the 45 degree angle on the pieces.

I created a jig that helps me hold my pieces at the necessary 90 degrees

I create the frame in pairs then glue the pairs together making sure that they are still square.

Notice one of the pieces has some gouges in it, this is not a problem as they will be covered up in the up coming step.

Once both pairs are glued together and you have ensured that it is square you are half way done.  What you have created is the face of the frame.
Now is the time to start to lock the frame together.  This is also the time that the channel is created.  To do this you will need to cut one board that is 12.50" x 1.25" x .25" and glue it along one of the long sides of the frame.  It will overlap the 40 Degree joint on both ends.

Continue to cut and fit lengths of 1.25" wide board all the way around the frame making sure that you get a good fit.

Congratulations if you have followed this along correctly when your glue dries you will have a frame that will hold an 8x10 picture that has a 1.50" wide frame with a .25" channel and is only .5 thick.  Hope this helps explain how I make most of my frames.

Paul you did a great job on that pattern.  A pattern from a picture that has large sections of the same coloring is very difficult to do, especially if it is one of those portraits of someone or some animal that you knew.  I once was asked to make a pattern of a cat, no problem right?  Well this cat was all white except the eyes, nose, mouth and very tips of the ears... that was a very difficult pattern to do.  I had to use a lot of artistic license to get it done for them.  You did an excellent job on that.  Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Making Halo's for the compound cut Angel Ornaments
« on: September 30, 2014, 08:23:29 am »
I have found an easy way to make the halo's for those compound cut Angel Ornaments that folks were doing a little while back.

1) a piece of 3/4 inch in diameter ( 19mm ) dowel rod 4 inches long
2) a 1/2 inch ( 13mm) Forstner bit.
3) a 3/4 inch ( 19mm) forstner bit.
4) an X Block
5) drill press
6) a piece of scrap wood to make the tool to find the center of the 3/4 inch dowel.

Chuck up the 3/4 in. forstner bit in the drill press drill 90% of the way through the scrap piece of wood.  Make sure that you do not go all the way through with the bit or you will have to start again. Using a smaller bit drill a hole in the very center of the hole you drilled with the forstner bit.  The insert the dowel into the hole and mark it with a pencil. It will look like this:

I made an X block a while back.  For those that are not familiar with what an X block is it is real simple.  Take two 3 inch by 3 inch boards that are 3/4 inch thick and find the centerline of each.  Cut a 3/4 inch wide slot 1/2 way across each of the blocks so that you have something that resembles a fat square C.  glue and fit the blocks together so that you have 90 degrees on each side and it looks like a big fat plus sign.  You will need this or something similar to ensure that your dowel is perfectly vertical when drilling it with the forstner bit.  It will look like this:

Take your 4 inch long 3/4 inch dowel and place it in the x block like this and clamp it in place then carefully locate the center of the dowel and drill it as deep as desired with the 1/2 in. ( 13mm ) forstner bit:

Then it is just a matter of cutting the halo's from the dowel at the thickness you wish to use.

Hope this helps folks
