General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Need Help to select a new planer
« on: November 06, 2011, 02:33:36 pm »
BOY!! Ya had me going there for a minute!! I have the DW 735 planer and LOVE it.
I grant that it is much nicer with a dust collector to get the chips but, De Walt does offer a catcher bag to go with it that fits over a trash can.
I bought a used Jet dust collector and it does make all the difference in the world. The first time I used mine, I almost drowned my son-in-law in chips. Then I got a length of hose and the collector bag which helped allot before I got a dust collector.
Don't even think about using a shop vac! You will clog up the vac hose so fast you can't believe it. A shop vac just can't keep up with the best bench planer on the market!

Gabby, where have you been all this time? I figured that out on the first project I made eight years ago!

Well Dave, I didn't say it was the BEST way to find out about which way the teeth ran. I just suggested that it was ONE way!  ::)
Thanks for trying anyway, I own shares of stock in the Band-Aid company and it sure helps me.  ;D

Thank goodness all the New Ultra Reverse blades Mike sent me have the dent at the top

To my fat little over worked and worn out fingers with these blades its very hard to feel the difference between up or down... (although I can see the 2 down and 1 up using the magnifier glass)

I do wish I had delicate and sensitive fingers like Gabby  :-*

Grip it tighter.....The blood will tell you which way is up!  :D :D :D :D

I had a customer one time that could not pay his weekly bill three different times over a period of 6 months because his Grandmother died.  ???  Not really sure how many lives she had.  ::)  >:(

That is a true story.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Picture on wood
« on: October 27, 2011, 10:33:32 am »
Gabby,
I'm not sure (I haven't tried it yet) but, I think your problem is painting the wood first. The paint doesn't let the ink of the picture soak in the pores of the wood and dry.
In the second video the guy says to sand the wood as smooth as you can before transferring the image but, nothing about sealing the wood first. Please try an image on just plain old sanded wood without paint or sealer of any kind.

With out a special key, you may not have had a spare tire to put on!
However, I must agree that the dealership should foot the tow bill for not making sure that the key was where it should have been.
Insted of a tow truck, you should have called the dealership or even a tire store for help. I'm sure either one would have a key and be happy to help. Again, any cost should be picked up by the seller of the truck.

Love it!! I love the way the knots line up to make a pattern. Is there a pattern for this vase I could use?

It is not really that hard to do. I think that Steve has a tute on his video section on how to make a vase.
I does require allot of sanding and you will use every sander and grit of paper you own, not to mention time. It is surprising how little wood is required unless you get really fancy and big or use glue-ups on your blank like the one on the right.....

I remember when my father brought our first TV home. It was B&W, I think there was two channels maybe three and we where the first on the block to have one.  ;)

It took my Dad 20 minutes to get the test pattern just right. We only had one channel in 1953. It only had any thing playing for 2 hours....From 5:00- 7:00 PM and every show was done in a snow storm!  ;D

Very nice job!! Thanks for showing how you cut the designs in the circumference. Very clever, I would have never thought of that and I doubt that I could do it on my De Walt saw anyway.
Size wise You got me beat by a full inch on height. I made a pitcher out of "Old growth Plywood" a few years ago that is only 12" tall...

thcubed,
This is actually my second windmill. The first blew over 4 times and broke (I live in Kansas and we do get winds over 60 MPH once in a while  ;D ) I kept fixing it until the last time and then it was just too far gone so I built another from the ground up. This time I used 4 pieces of angle iron 24" long and drove it into the ground 12" and bolted the legs to it.
It has a crank shaft at the top and it drives a "suction rod" up and down on a 2" throw but, it doesn't really do anything as far as "work" or bringing up water.
The entire structure is made of cedar (except for the crank and bearings which are steel) The first one lasted about 3 years and this one has stood for over 1 year so far.
As far as selling it, I have never thought about it and no one has asked to buy it so I really have no idea where I would price it.
The wood is fairly inexpensive and is good with weather, the bearings were about $40.00 and I used long 5/8" bolts for the crankshaft and I guess it took me about 4 days to build the second one. (Face it, the first one took two weeks but, I had a pattern and knew more or less how to do it the second time around  ;D )
I think you could use your same plan and just scale it down so that it would be easier to handle and could be either anchored or moved inside during bad weather. And you would have a saleable item. As to price, that is just something you will have to figure out with your cost and time spent as well as your area people.
