General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Finish on walnut
« on: March 05, 2015, 06:14:24 pm »
For certain you don't want any stain on walnut. BLO will highlight the contrast between the sap wood and heart wood, but if you have all heart wood it will become very dark. I like the rich color.

Scott - I'm sorry to hear of your health issues, but happy to have another scroller in the mix.

I think most people here would consider it hand made even if you use a scroll saw. It will likely be a better product than can be cut with a fretsaw or coping saw. The speed of the blade and the ability to control the workpiece is pretty remarkable on a good scroll saw. I also doubt that anyone here would look down on a nice project cut with a hand saw.

Wooden clocks can be beautiful works of art and by necessity are pretty big (like Victor Frankenstein, you just can't get it to work that small). My impression is the accuracy is not all that great (a few minutes per day), but they can be electrically regulated with a simple electromagnetic circuit and tickler using either a watch crystal at 32768 Hz (for DC power) or the 60 Hz power system (or is that 50 Hz down under? I always forget).

Usually if you buy a plan from someone you have the right to make and sell the piece, but not to sell the plans. If you make your own plan, or set up a team of scrollers to develop a plan, then there's no one to pay a royalty to. That would be an interesting team to work on - if you do set one up, I'd be happy to lend a hand.

That's a lot of cutting but it will look great when done. Please post a photo.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Collapsing basket
« on: March 05, 2015, 03:32:30 pm »
The angle is a little different when you consider the slope of the ring when you open the basket. If you have a 6" outside diameter, cut your spirals to be 1/4" thick, go for a rise of 1/4, 3/8, or 1/2", and use either a 0.010" Kerf or a 0.015" Kerf, the blade angles are as below.
Diameter   6
Ring   0.25
Kerf   0.01
H           0.25      0.375   0.5
Angle   2.23      1.44   1.02

Kerf   0.015
H           0.25       0.375   0.5
Angle   3.38       2.20   1.60

I can send you a spreadsheet if you want to fill in your own numbers.

Here's a simple one from Inkscape. This is Scroll Beach Italic at 72 point font. These will be scrollable (no parts falling out).

See: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/404error.htm

404 means the resource you were trying to load cannot be found. Maybe the image or whatever it is was removed by the author, or one of the forum monitors might have removed it for copyright reasons.

Increasing the angle will decrease the opening of the basket. Decreasing the angle or using a larger blade will increase the opening.

When cutting for inlay or an interference fit (like you want with the basket) you calculate the angle or the drop by this formula:
sin(angle) = blade kerf/drop height = K/D. (wood thickness does not come into it).
You can reorder this so that D = K/sin(angle) or angle = inverse sin(K/D)

So if you use an FDUR#5 blade and cut at 3 degrees,
 sin(3) = 0.052; K = 0.015 (from Mike's web site for that blade); Drop D = K/sin(angle) = 0.015/0.052 =  0.286" (a little more than 1/4")

If you use a smaller blade like the FD-TC 2/0 (0.008" kerf), then D = 0.008/0.052 = 0.154" (a little more than 1/8")

So go to a thicker blade or a smaller angle to get the basket to open more. Too small an angle an you won't get it to grab. Here's a few calculated values using the FD-UR #5:
Angle          Drop
1                 0.86 (will not grab on a 3/4" blank)
2                 0.43 (may not grab on a 1/2" blank)
3                 0.29
4                 0.22
5                 0.17

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Putting a finish on Oak

Things that get picked up can develop a patina over time of the finish is not too tough. If you like that patina look, try Howard's Feed N Wax. It is a mix of orange oil and beeswax that brings out the grain and then leaves a matte waxed finish.

Here's a shot using std fonts, if you can use it.

DW - do you have any details on the plug at the bottom? Is there anything to snug it closed or is it simply a twist in place?

I don't think you'd have to manipulate this one - it seems to be free of floaters and ready to cut. Some others might not be directly cuttable.

If you google "Nightmare Before Christmas Stencil" you'll find a bunch. Here's a sample:

A question for Russ - IF I put the above URL into the  phrase using the Picture button (Mona Lisa, above), IS THAT A LEGAL POSTING? As I understand, this is not a copy of the image, just a direction to it, and it used to be allowed. Sample:

ebay lists a bunch of 40 watt at <$500, then 50 watt at about $2000. I've seen some reviews of the 40 watt units that seem to indicate they work, but I'd bet the quality is not what you'd want for production work. Probably OK for prototypes or one-offs, and to learn the methods.

I also saw a kickstarter with a different design (LED Laser with no mirrors) that might be interesting.
