I went to http://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/index.php and it is working for me.

This list will be very useful when searching for a pattern.  I know there is a search function on the pattern page but this provides a different way to search for a pattern.  I think we will be using both pages to find that special pattern.

Thanks Steve,
Jim

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Need help not getting square cut on scrollsaw
« on: November 11, 2016, 08:39:17 am »
When I started scrolling, it took some effort to not push the wood sideways in an attempt to bring the blade back onto the line.  I finally learned that the way to get back to the line is to turn the wood, not to push sideways.

Another possibility is that your blade doesn't have the correct tension so it easily bows sideways or front to back.  Steve Good has a sound file in his blog http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.ca/  (on the left side partway down) that lets you hear the sound a correctly tensioned blade makes.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Woodworkers Award
« on: November 08, 2016, 11:06:18 am »
Odd.  I wanted to see what they said about Steve but when I went to the site and clicked on the link announcing the winner, it took me to the voting page.  Even going through the WGOA blog, the link to the announcement of the winners just went to the voting page.

Sure glad he won - he deserves it.

The Coffee Shop / Life
« on: October 17, 2016, 02:11:30 pm »
A teacher asked her class, "What do you expect out of life? "

Wee Margaret raised her hand said, "All I want for my life is four little
animals, just like my Mom always says. "

The teacher then asked her, " Really and what four little animals would they
be?" Wee margaret responded, "A mink on my back, a jaguar in the garage, a
tiger in my bed and a jackass to pay for all of this!"

The teacher got a coughing fit and had to leave the room!

"When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, best strategy is to dismount "

However, in government, more advanced strategies are often employed, such as:

1. Buying a stronger whip.

2. Changing riders.

3. Appointing a committee to study the horse.

4. Arranging to visit other countries to see how other cultures ride dead horses.

5. Lowering the standards so that dead horses can be included.

6. Reclassifying the dead horse as living-impaired.

7. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.

8. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed.

9. Providing additional funding and/or training to increase the dead horse's  performance.

10. Doing a  productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse's  performance.

11. Declaring that as the dead horse does not have to be fed, it is less costly, carries lower overhead and therefore contributes substantially more to the bottom line of the economy than do some other horses.

12. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses.

And of course....

13 Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position.

If you don't understand this theory, you haven't lived long enough

The Coffee Shop / The Driving Test
« on: September 05, 2016, 10:06:35 am »
A lady failed the driving test 4 times.. At the fifth attempt, she was
determined to pass. But the test had the same question : "You are driving at
120 mph. On your right is a wall, on your left is a cliff. On the road, you
see an old man and a young man. What will you hit ?".

The woman walked up to the examiner and said, "I've answered this question
in all four ways, wall, cliff, young man, old man. Yet I failed all the four
times. How is this possible? What am I supposed to hit ????"

Examiner : "The brakes!!!"

Men are not suppose to laugh please !!!!

I have to admit that I also had the wrong answer, until I read the last line.

Good one.

Saw a fish that could drive his tank - on the Discovery Channel.  Here's a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbNmL6hSNKw  It's interesting what entertains people - never would have thought of trying to build an aquarium that follows the fish in it.

The Coffee Shop / Post crash - minor problem and solution
« on: August 13, 2016, 09:46:38 am »
After Steve worked so hard to restore my favourite forum, I was not seeing the new posts.  Didn't think much about it until this morning, just thought nobody was posting - should have known better.

It turns out I had to login again and now everything is good.  If anyone else is having trouble seeing where there are new post, try logging in.

Have a good day,
Jim

Spirithorse, sorry, I didn't get back to you sooner.  I was referring to the July 7 "Safe boating" pattern which guaranteed protection against attacks by Kracken.  http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.ca/2016_07_07_archive.html

Not sure how I got July 8 in the subject line - my bad.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Belt Sander question
« on: July 27, 2016, 02:05:13 pm »
Brian's idea seems right.  I hadn't noticed the clamp bolts on the arm holding the small pulley.  The clamp overcomes my concern about the working side of the belt running on the face of the pulley.

Good catch,
Jim

The Coffee Shop / Re: Belt Sander question
« on: July 27, 2016, 07:17:29 am »
It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like a spring tensioner to take up slack in the sanding belt.  Can you rotate the small pulley either clockwise or counter-clockwise around the large pulley?  Does the small pulley resist being rotated?  Is the belt tight as it is now installed?

From what I can see, my best guess would be that you rotate the small pulley counter-clockwise (with the belt slack) and pass the belt "under" the small pulley.  This would maintain tension as the belt stretches.

The problem (?) with this is that the sanding (rough) side of the belt would be running on the face of the small pulley.

Having said all this, I could be all wet but hope it gives you some ideas.  Someone else might have more experience with this type of machine and be able to give a definite answer.

Best of luck,
Jim

Sheila, thanks for the suggestions.  Interesting about the "randomizer" for prices.
