The Coffee Shop / Re: Add glue to exterior paint

Don?t know where you live Dirts, but here in the UK, we have been using watered down PVA glue as a size before painting concrete floors and roughcast walls for years, it also acts as a stabilizer and sealant that helps to reduce the amount of paint required on newly rendered walls.  I don?t recall anyone having actually mixed it with the paint though.     Iggy

Anyone remember, Singin in the rain, Ben Hur, the Student Prince and The Robe. Then you are getting on. I can remember our first Posh family car as being a Ford V8 Custom, the one with the bullet in the front, saw one the other day in a Vintage car show, Ohhh that hurt. Iggy

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: VIBRATION ?
« on: February 12, 2012, 08:30:25 am »
Following on from an earlier post, I made a false plate in ?? plywood, fixed it to the saw having removed the steel one first, it made no difference to the noise or vibration of the saw. I then took off the inspection cover at the back and watched it flying round for a while and came to the conclusion that the counter balance on the eccentric cam is not set correctly as most of the vibration is coming from that area. There is an allan key holding the counter balance in place but I don?t want to disturb it for fear of violating the warranty so it looks as though it is back to Axminster to sort out. I tried the coin test and it kept falling over. The spanner, used to fit the temporary plate, worked its way off the bench even though the saw was clamped to the table.    Iggy. :(  :(

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: A cold chill
« on: February 11, 2012, 06:26:55 am »
Hi Malc. I took my saw into the far end of our kitchen where there is a table and did a couple of hours in there during a recent cold spell, never again. The suction to it was forbidden (noise) and it took me 4 hrs of intensive dusting and cleaning along with 4hrs of intensive ear bashing to put things right. Cold days are now devoted to prep work for future projects and watching how- to vids on the U-Tube.
I was in Dover last year, stayed in Canterbury for a few days and took in Dover Castle and the bunkers etc Good day out except for the incessant rain and a wind that had you standing at a 30 degree list to stay up. Iggy.

My saw does not have a dedicated stand, I put it on a ?? ply base to be able to clamp it to my fold down work top. So the undercarriage is not as firm as a butchers block either, only fairly rigid, bearing that shortfall in mind, when I put it on the worktop without clamps and turn the speed up full, it will slowly walk its way off the table. When clamped down, the vibration is transmitted to the work bench and everything on the bench starts moving around. Yes I have done the adjustments as described by Steve, and there is very little N/S movement, I have also tightened all the nuts and bolts, around the saw and arms, so there is little to no movement E/W either.
When I think about it, the whole thing is so solid, that it is like a hammer drill with this mechanism inside leaping up and down at 1,500 revs/Min. There is no rubber bushing to dampen it down, if there were, you would lose the direct drive effect and therefore some accuracy, because the workings would be independent of the top. Unfortunately, along with the vibration comes the noise at higher speed, and as described earlier in this posting, I was going to add some soundproofing to the top and possibly to the sides as well. But before I do that, I intend to make a temporary ?? MDF plate to replace the steel one, to see if that helps. I will let you know how that performs when I have tested it.
While on the subject, ask Keefie about his problems with the EX 16, he is into his third one now and still having problems. Being fair to Axminster, the supplier over here, they are actively trying to sort him out but how far does patience get you. I have no idea where your saws in the States come from but ours are made by General International of Montreal. Unfortunately the manual omits to tell us where they are made.      Iggy.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Using Cedar

Sorry Dan, it?s an English thing. Since rocking horses don?t Poo, owning a piece of it would be worth a fortune, like owning a piece of moon-rock. Just our way of saying it is expensive. Last time I priced it, it was about 3 times as dear as Hemlock.  Iggy

I made a Cedar sewing box for my wife about 25 years ago, there is no metal in it at all, wooden hinges as well (Iroko Hinges). She has given up sewing now and the box still in working order has been passed on to no 2 daughter, still smelling of freshly sharpened pencils. It is soft and works well and is a favourite for T & G sheds. the bugs hate the taste and it lasts forever, ask the German Members, they are a must have over there. You are  lucky to have it, it is dearer than rocking horse poo over here in the UK.    Iggy

My EX21 is perfectly behaved while no cutting is in progress, as soon as I start cutting, it starts making a noise like hammer drill hitting a girder. I have worked out that it is so solid in build with that thick solid steel plate, that it does act like a girder, and have decided to apply a dampening effect to the underside of the plate by adding some of that (I don?t know what they call it) padding they add to the inside of car doors and trunk wells to dampen the noise and vibration. My old cheap saw has no such problem as the plate is ally and turns over at the edges, so being less dense, absorbs the vibration a lot better.   Iggy   P S. Adrian Iredale has a wonderful vid on building Claton Boyer's Bird of Paradise clock.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Air Brush Help.
« on: February 10, 2012, 05:06:48 pm »
I just love cutting things out and putting them together, after that I lose interest, probably because I am useless at finishing. With that in mind I decided to hit the problem head on and have bought an air brush and little compressor, I now need some practice and know  how, some of you must know where I can find the best info on the subject. The tube is full of it, but mostly in a demonstration mode and not on learning the craft, or am I looking in the wrong places? I would really appreciate some help here.   ::)  ::)

And when you go to the ATM and no matter how you try, can't remember the Pin no.
Go upstairs twice befoe remembering what you went up for, then finding it is downstairs after all.
Start a project, put it on one side for the want of something from the shop, then find it again 2 years later.
