General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Magnifying Lamp

If the unit you guys are discussing has the circular fluorescent tube, I kept breaking them on my saw arm when a blade broke, so I bought a piece of clear plastic and made a doughnut to tape over the bottom of the unit.  No more breaking bulbs!  I just tape it in place with duct tape.

Never had an Excalibur,, but I have had 2 diifferent models of Hawk and I havent met anyone that doesn't love them.  Be patient and you can find them on Cl at advantageous prices.  Parts are available, and they are in production again.

I have had an electric iron for over a year now and use it often.  I have to admit that most of my projects are larger than a simple scrolling project however.  It's hard to beat the consistency and convenience of the electric units.  Another option is to locate someone with a laser engraver and hire them to engrave a batch of wooden coins (for lack of a better term).  Then you can inlay those with a forstner bit and perhaps inlay a shiny penny from the current year on the back of the project as well.

If you decide to try a wood filler, I have had great success with the Timbermate brand.  It comes precolored in a variety but also stains well and sands well. Better than any I've tried.

My paddle switches are electrical and replace the existing ones, however I think the one on my Unisaw is a magnetic switch.  That's why I have been hesitant to replace that one.  I need to unplug the saw and open the switch to examine it.  I just keep procrastinating.

Nice setup Roger.  I would like to do the same to my Unisaw, but I'm unsure about how to set it up with the 220v motor.  I think it may use a magnetic switch.  I agree it is definetly a big advantage on a table saw!

I have a deadman on my RBI scrollsaw, but a paddle switch on my router table.  The paddles allows me to  move around more, but has the safety aspect of hitting it with anything should a problem arise.

Sounds good.  I'm not sure where you get your knives, but if you watch the sales at Woodcrafter's they periodically have all of the sizes on sale for about $10 each.  I bought several a year or so ago and used my scrollsaw and pattern bits on my router table to make the scales (handles).  I gave all but 1 out as gifts and have that one for my own use.

I think you are just getting started GB!  Keep doing new things all the time and you don't have to worry about growing old.

Happy Bday

I often digitize monograms for my wife's embroidery machine.  If you tell me the letters, size, and layout, I would be happy to send you a pic if it might help.

I have made a few projects like Steve's Keychains with names in them.  It.s a little like hard maple or purpleheart, dense and hard, easy to burn.  Slow things down and use a coarser blade than you normally might.
