General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Age to start on scroll saw?

The scrollsaw was actually the first powertool I owned.  My Dad bought me one at a young age and I used it for several years.  It was a Sears unit termed a "vibrator scrollsaw".  The blade travel was so short you could hold your finger against the blade without being cut.  It wouldn't cut anything at all thick and used pin end blades, but I sure chewed up a lot of 1/4 inch plywood with it.  BTW, that was in the 1960's.

It doesn't have to be the length of the board you are planning, just long enough to put alongside the original board a few inches before the end goes through, and extending a few inches further.  It stops the feed roller from bouncing down and helps fight the tendency for the board to lift up into the blades.

termite,  Here is a link to Pozgai's and the RBI blade holder they sell.  I don't have them, and have often wondered how much of an improvements they are.  I've never seen anyone comment on them either, but I'd sure like to hear from someone who has tried them/  http://www.pozsgaidesigns.com/page0006.htm

I have used a number of floor standing planers, and currently use a 15" powermatic with a spherical cutterhead.  If I could make a suggestion, when you are running boards that thin through the planer they can lift off the bed once they have passed the feed roller causing snipe and/or the chipping you refer to.  A simple old method of controlling it is to put a piece of similar thickness scrap alongside the board you are planning a few inches before the end of the board enters the planer.  Also, if the board is at all long, use outfeed tables or rollers so the outfeed end of the board doesn't tend to drop and raise the part still under the cutters.

Pattern Requests. / Re: pattern circular cutting guide router

Frank,

I don't have a design, but it is pretty easy to make.  Simply trace your router sub-base onto a piece of thin plywood and include a "leg" or handle protruding from one side.  Cut the center out to allow the router bit to pass through and replace your sub-base with the new guide.  Measure from the edge of the router bit to a spot equal to the center of the circle you want to cut and then drive a small nail through as a pivot point.  This makes a trammel guide for your router which you can set to whatever size circle you want by replacing the nail.   Be careful with which way you turn the router around your wood.  This will cut out a circle of wood.  If what you want is to cut small circles out of a larger project, you can make a template out of mdf or plywood and use a pattern cutting bit in your router.

Looks a lot like the one I caught and relocated Tuesday.  he was a cute little feller about 5 foot long.  Not a real pleasant disposition though.  Didn't really want to be messed with.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Polyurethane or Lacquer
« on: October 31, 2011, 09:32:39 am »
I like lacquer, but I also use a lot of shellac.  Similar qualities, as in quick drying, easy to work with.  Can't explain, but the solvent for shellac, denatured alcohol, seems a little friendlier than lacquer thinner.  I only use poly on table tops or things that must be water and alcohol resistant.

Did you get anything good Russ?  Haven't been fishing since I hung up my speargun.  I have a kayak, but haven't tried fishing from it yet.  Too bad there is no good way to hook & line mullet!  There are usually a hoard of them jumping in a local spot we paddle.

Go on and give in Judy.  If they wanted you to wait they wouldn't have sent it so early.  You know I didn't wait.
