Ask Steve a question. / Re: Porter cable scroll saw

Even tho I had problems with my PC Scrollsaw I still liked it. Cut a lot of projects with it. I also made a PVC wrench like those shown. A friend that has a metal lathe made me a metal wrench with a brass head to fit the thumb knob. I used it for a good while, but when doing a piece with lots of frets, I would switch back to the PVC because of the weight.  I also switced to  Mikes FD blades before switching to the 788. That in itself was like getting a new saw.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Which Ornaments Sell Best?
« on: September 10, 2012, 08:31:03 pm »
My best sellers are the ones I didn,t cut. Someone always asks for something I don't have. I actually do better with small ornament size crosses than  traditional type ornaments.

On a side note,  I cut several different cross patterns and have taken to giving one  or two to a special lady here in our park.  One is a very fragile cross and I cut it from  1/8 Baltic Birch. When I went to give it to her, she was on her deck with her daughter getting her hair cut.  The daughter remarked how beautiful the cross was and that she knew her Mom would enjoy it.  I told her I would see about getting one to her and I did a few days later.  Last week the Lady's husband passed away. (We knew he did not have much longer). Funeral was last week.  We saw the Lady tonight riding around the park on our golf cart  She told me her daughter thought the cross was so special that she put in her Fathers hand for it to be buried with him.  I told her I was happy she did that but was really at a loss for words.  Guess now I need to make another for the Daughter

WOW! These trivets are really nice.  I can already see them on tables around the world. Thanks for sharing. I grabbed a copy of each. I will get around to cutting them. but I also save patterns to to help me learn to design myself. Again Thanks!

Pulled out the wifes bicycle yesterday and the comment was:  This woul be better off outside with a tarp over it. At least it would not be covered in sawdust.

My reply:  Aren't you glad I have a dust collector?

My arm still hurts!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: use the whole blade
« on: September 05, 2012, 04:53:20 pm »
I use blades until the will no longer do what I ask of them. If the blade isn't broken, sometimes I will break it so I will not be tempted. Have a used blade container screwed to the table in easy reach.

I use the clear packing tape almost exclusively and I get it at  the Dollar Tree. Second choice is Family Dollar or Dollar General.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: drilling holes in pattern
« on: September 04, 2012, 08:40:23 pm »
Rob.

Regardless of the drill bit size you still have to cut the entire perimeter of the fret. I drill my holes as close  to the line as I can, this way I only have a very short way to cut to reach the line. Experience and the " necessary direction of the cut" will dictate a lot.  I also think with a large bit, the chance to make a fine piece of designer firewood is much greater.

Brand new at the Blue Store for $189.  I had 2. the first came out of the box with the cable that adjusts the table tilt hanging out and the table would not tilt correctly. My second developed the same problem after a few months and I was able to return it for a full refund. I liked the saw very much except for that. and its a bottom feed machine. Also I made a tool to tighten the bottom tension bolt as it was to tough for my fingers. After the second break down, I started doing research and found that was a common problem. Many said it was a good saw until you tilt the table.  If you do get it,  #1  Check the tilt. and #2  see if the indicator reads 0 when the table is square to the blade or at least close. My second started getting off as much as 15 degrees. Table was level and square to the blade indicator read 15. Shortly after that it just came apart.
