General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Any real advantage in an expensive saw
« on: December 07, 2011, 07:22:46 pm »
You guys know me, I sometimes go against the grain.........

I say NO, it will not make you a better scroller. Not even twice as much better not to mention five times. Only practice will do that. I have done, and seen others do some very fine work with the less expensive saws.
There is nothing in the world that will improve your cutting and finishing more than education and practice, practice, practice! I have owned three saws over the years (I now have a DW 788) and each one has made cutting easier and somewhat faster but, I can't say any of them made my work any better.
No saw, blade, or finishing method will make a project any better than what you are doing now. You just need experience.
You can get the education you need on this site just by asking questions now, you just need to get some saw dust on your knees.  ;)

Just my two cents worth.

An interesting idea.. but the thought of actually carrying it out kind of scares me LOL..

When you file your income taxes at the end of the year do you ever wonder where all that money went?  ;D
The BOOK will tell you.  ::)  :o

Is that where you got the nickname Rapid Roger? ;D ::)

Yep, it sure is.  ;)  I was getting 110 MPH out of a 100cc motor on the straight away on the right track. We raced on a minimum of 1-1/2 mile road course tracks for one hour per race. It was a real BLAST!  :)

My wife keeps a register (diary) of our spending every year as a matter of habit. She has been doing this for more than 35 years and starts a new one every January.
If the subject of how old the lawnmower is, she can look it up, tell you when we bought it, how much we paid for it and the serial number on it!  :o
I have learned NOT to estimate how old something is or what the price was when it was purchased if she questions my memory on something. I bow to the BOOK.  :-[
When I was racing Go-Karts back in the '80s I won the points championship one year. I was showing her my trophy and she commented that it was a very expensive dust collector. After dragging out her book she showed me that the trophy had really cost me $10,000.00!!!  :o ::) :o ;D
But, you are right, it can be a very interesting read sometimes.  ;D

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Portrait to pattern question
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:14:33 am »
You have a very good start there.
One point I might make...Sometimes too much detail is a bad thing. If you just go for a "suggestion" of shape using veining and keep more of the wood and less holes, it can improve the overall look of things. But, that is just a personal point of view.
I am a "KISS" kind of guy (keep it simple stupid) I feel that  about 25% of hole and 75% of wood makes things look a lot more interesting. Especially if you have interesting grain in the wood but, even on a plainer wood such as Baltic birch plywood just a suggestion of shape like in a sketch attracts attention.

Just my two cents worth.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Despite the wind

Selling $450 in a wind storm is defiantly not a bad day. Maybe the wind helped the sale.  ;)

I'm sure that the wind did not help the sale but, it would help a sail.  ;D ;D

I can believe that. It just proves that animals are just afraid of humans as humans are afraid of animals. Unless they are really hungry or you are messing with their offspring they would rather avoid a person. Why do you think that people have to hunt animals?

My sister-in-law bought me an "electric hammer" like that about 30 years ago.  :D  I bought her a cordless screw driver just a few years ago.  :D  (No it didn't have batteries either.) ;D

I don't think they are females. There isn't a female in the world that can get anything done in one day. They would want to stop and visit at every house and that could take a year for Santa to get finished.

I have a LOT of habits. Most of them BAD in the eyes of other people. But I enjoy them and am too old to even WANT to change them now.  ;D

Ask Steve a question. / Re: drillling holes
« on: November 29, 2011, 11:36:53 am »
MRSN,
I have one of those Harbor Freight drill presses from around 1984 myself. Bought it new as a matter of fact, and I don't think you can get a new one that works any better for the price. Mine was around $65.00 as I recall.
Mine is the bench top model and I have used the heck out of it for all these years and she never gave me a bit of problem.
You just might want to think about it before you "Trade up".  ;)
Newer isn't always better if you know what I mean.  ;)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blades cutting like cutting butter.... :+}

I have used the "crown tooth" style blades that cut in both directions and when it gets dull, I just take it out, flip it over (upside down) and have a new set of teeth at the cut line and the worn out teeth above. I double my mileage that way.  ;D
