General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: picture frame makers
« on: March 05, 2012, 10:18:06 am »
Al tho I've never had that "problem", I think that I would set the fence of my table saw close to the blade (depending on how much you need to remove) and rip off a strip on all four outer sides of the frame. Then you could run the frame on the router table to put a roundover or ogee shape edge on it to finish it off.
I like Intarsia 92/s idea and formula for planning ahead. I had never considered anything like that before. Neat idea!  ;)

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Sand Paper Strips?
« on: March 02, 2012, 02:45:10 pm »
I have tried the ones with the plastic "T" ends on them and they weren't worth a HOOT for me. Didn't fit my saw clamps at all. I have since made my own and use them from time to time.
I just cut sand paper of the desired grit about 5" long and 1/2" wide. Fold it long ways so you end up with a 5" x 1/4" wide strip and install in the saw just as you would a pin-less blade. Keep the tension low as they will tend to break if over tensioned and pushed to the side too far.
Hope that helps.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: wooden gear clock
« on: March 02, 2012, 10:53:00 am »
Keefie, I got the plans from Scroll Saw magazine (spring 2011 issue) and the clock was designed by Clayton Boyer. He has these and a lot of other designs on line. Go to  www.lisaboyer.com.  to view and order plans.

As for more pictures. I didn't have as many as I thought. This one is of some of the various parts as I was cutting and rounding up things for the clock.

This is one of a tempory mounting of the clock sitting on a shelf in my shop trying to get it to run. I later made the "post" stand for the clock. It is really suppose to mount on a wall perminatly. I've been keeping the clock in my shop and do not have "wall" room for it and I wanted to make it more mobil.

I made a gear clock and I think I can help.
Use the BEST (most plys) plywood you can find for the gears. Yes, solid hardwood can be used for the hands and other parts where expansion and contraction from humidity won't effect the clock movement. DO NOT put any finish on the gears. Stain or finish on the hardwood will be OK.
If you are talking about the shafts that the gears turn on....NO! you must use brass for them. Keep the shafts clean, smooth and straight with just a very light coat of wax to keep everything free.
As far as the weight and counter weight, you can use almost anything of the appropriate weight. Wooden dowel rod is used for the pendulum and be sure to start with a full 48" (DAMHIKT) and trim it about 1/2" at a time until the accuracy is right.
Clocks are not hard to make but the hardest and most time consuming thing to do is "making it work and getting it to keep accurate time" I spent a month on that and I truly mean that. The clock took about three days to cut and assemble.
Hope that helps and if you have more questions, feel free to ask. Contact me with "e mail" if you need to.

Hey GB.....
Do you know the price of copper these days?  ::)
Watch out! Someone will steal your stash of blades just for the copper wire!  :o
I just heard on TV that it costs a cent and a half to make a penny!  >:(
I'm on Mikes side as far as keeping too much valuable metal around.  ;D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: another "I'm curious " poll

The only time I even think about it is when the table is tilted and I'm stack cutting inlays on a project. Which brings to mind.............
No one has even discussed this type of cutting on this forum. I haven't tried one for quite some time but, I have done them in the past. Has anyone else done this type of cutting?
I may have to post some pictures of some that I have done.

Good start.
But, I have a question. Why did you start the pattern from the outside instead of the center? I generally will rough cut a pattern to get the size down a little but then start the interior cuts first. I usually go for the smallest areas first and then work up to the larger areas as I  go and leave the outside cuts for the very last. I feel that there is less chance for damage to the pattern while I'm cutting using my system.
Just curious.
We all have noses and opinions.

My purchase came to $11. 14. I gave the cashier a $20.00, a $1.00 a dime and 4 Penny's. She gave back the $1, the dime and the 4 Penny's and proceeded to give me the change from the $20.00 saying that I had given her too much money.  :o  I just said that a $10.00 bill would have been enough change and walked out.  >:(

+1 for the dead-man style.
The only way to fly (or scroll).
Much safer and easier to use.

The Coffee Shop / Re: New flag for City
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:15:31 am »
That is a BIG flag!!! 1800 square foot of heavy weight cloth material can weigh a lot!!!! And with a strong wind, I would worry that it ould pull the tower over! I hope they have good luck with it.
I once saw an American flag big enough to cover a football field. When it was folded (it was too big to fold in the proper manner) it filled an enclosed trailer the size of a semi truck trailer. I honestly don't rember the actual size of that flag but, they had to use a forklift to pick it up it when it was folded.

As a matter of fact, I really did just get home from my yearly physical. The Doc. gave me another appointment for next year around the same time so, I guess the outlook is good.  ;D ;)
Or maybe he is just an optimist.  ::)

Now you've gone and got me excited about trying something new!!!
I too would like to see some pictures of your work and more of how you do it.
What are you talking about when you mention "back prints and sitting down or leaning against a wall"?
Have you tried making lettering and numbers for putting quotes or names on shirts?
