The Coffee Shop / Re: Severe Weather
« on: April 15, 2012, 08:43:55 pm »
We made it through OK. Had twisters to the west about 30 miles and to the east (around Wichita) and to the north about 70 miles (near Salina). We got about 1/4" of rain, a few small hail stones and winds around 40 - 50 MPH and that was it!! Had a nice but breezy day today.

You can over come the switch problem by using a dead man's foot switch. Then you can turn on the saw switch and cover it with clear tape (to keep the saw dust out) and never worry about it again.
It takes a bit of getting used to using your foot to turn the saw on and off but, once you have tried it for a day or two you will wonder why the saw didn't just come with a foot switch!  ;D

I agree with you. we have had a lot more rain than usual in Kansas too. I think I can actually sit on the porch swing and watch the grass grow literally!!!   ;D :D ;)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Air Conditioner in Woodshop
« on: April 11, 2012, 10:36:11 am »
I've had a window air conditioner in my wood shop for the last 15 - 20 years and it just keeps going like the Energizer Bunny. In fact it is mounted in a window right next to my scroll saw! I live in South Central Kansas and it does get warm here too. Last summer was a real "so and so" especially. It lowers the temp about 20 - 25 degrees below the outside temp. and I have three windows, two walk doors and an overhead door.
Yes, you must clean or replace the filter from time to time but that is not a problem. I  cover mine with a large plastic bag on the outside and block the inside with newspapers in the winter. It gets cold here in the winter too.  ;D
I say......

GO FOR IT!!!!

Rog

PS Mount it on the NORTH side of the shop if at all possible.

I would pray that someone else would take over or start another site like this one and we all would find it the next day.  ;)
This site is very important to all of us but, if you stop and think about it, it is us that makes this a community worth while.  :)
All tho Steve got us all here, it is the people here that make it so great and while I do appreciate what he has done (and continues to do) it takes all of us to keep it going.  ;) :)
Don't worry, I'm sure anything like that will never happen.

LONG LIVE STEVE AND THE PEOPLE WITH A COMMEN INTREST IN SCROLL SAWING AND COMMUNITY!  :-*  :-*

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Looking into buying a router table?
« on: March 31, 2012, 10:20:27 pm »
GB, is it a sign of old age when we find ourselves getting excited over new power tools? I too enjoy playing with my router and discovering all the neat ways I can improve my projects with a simple router bit. You should see how I react when I get out my wood burning kit. I think I had better stop before I start showing my age :-)

Louis

That is not a sign of age!!! That is what wood working is all about!  ;D
It doesn't matter if you are a scroller or a furniture maker or a home builder, it is all about using your tools (even hand tools) to discover newer, faster, easier, or more beautiful ways of doing things with wood. The only thing stopping most people of discovering new things rests between their ears. Age has nothing to do with it!
That is not a rant, that is what keeps me intrested in my hobby. ;D

I'm expecting that I'll get mine in November. Not looking forward to the operation but, if I could just read the words on TV with out a shadow or see just one star instead of three at a time, it may be worth it.
I can't see all my mistakes, but I can feel them when I do wood working.  ;)

I have the Ridgid sander too. I got mine at Home Depot. I love it because it is so easy to change sizes of drums and paper and even changing to the belt sander not to mention the dust port for the shop vac and it is so light weight and portable also.

Reaper,
There is no "BEST" way to do anything like that. Do what ever strikes you to try. That is the best thing about any "ART" it can vary from person to person and there are more ways and ideas to use than grains of sand on the beach.
If you stack cut a pattern (say you have three of the items) you have three chances to try different methods to see what YOU like best. Then in the future you have a better idea of what you like or don't like about the different methods.
For me, most of the fun of wood working is trying different things and ideas. That is why I have made about 20 small boxes that were not intended to do anything special or go to anyone in particular. It was just the fun of trying different joints or lids or finishes or inlays or woods or........

Go to the house cleaning supplies in any grocery store. It will be among the furniture polishing items.
I found mine in an Ace hardware store even.  ;D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Question about glueing
« on: March 10, 2012, 11:01:36 am »
I use a page of an old news paper. Unfold it, lay it on an old chair in my shop, put the pattern on it and spray the glue. I let it set for a few minutes and after applying the pattern to the wood, I throw the news paper into the recycle bin. Easy peasy!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Making picture frames for the first time
« on: March 08, 2012, 10:12:47 pm »
If you have a table saw and a router, making a picture frame to suit your needs should not be a problem. If you are lacking these tools, my suggestion would be to glue on (laminate) some 1/8" wood or plywood strips to the back of the frame you have to make it thicker and thereby making the groove deeper.
Just an idea.
