Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Scroll Saw Sanding
« on: June 16, 2012, 09:04:56 am »
A cheaper way to do the sanding belts for the saw is to cut strips of the desired grit sand paper to 1/2" +/-  x 5" long. Fold the strip in half long ways so you get a piece 1/4" by 5" long and install in the saw just like a blade. You will have sand paper on each side to use.
This only works with pin less clamps however.  ;D

Not long after we got married (1969) my wife elbowed me in the ribs when she saw me noticing a rarher nice looking young lady and said "You are married now!" I replied "Yes, I know that I got married but, I didn't go blind." After that, she would sometimes point out someone that I might have missed.  ;D

My name is Roger and I used to race "Enduro Go Karts" (Yea the ones that you lay down on and drive 80-100 MPH on.) I raced for about 6 years and was very slow at first but as I got better and started winning races people started my nick name of "Rapid Roger" and it just stuck. Most people just call me "Rog" these days.
Now that I'm into wood working for a hobby, several people have mentioned how fast I get my projects done. Not that they are all that good but, I am fairly quick. :)
Concentration is the key to speed.

Will it be aired on ESPN? I'm sure it would be one football game that I would watch and so would a lot of others.
Will they have male cheer leaders? I'll volunteer.
Sponsorship should NOT be a problem.

True story.....

Last week a neighbor lady locked her keys in the car at the gas station. Her son in law came to get a second set of keys and set the house alarm off. He drove to the gas station to give her the keys and back to the house before the police arrived. Then he had to explain why the alarm company had called them and they weren't sure weather to believe him or not...??????

Over 36 is one thing.....Over 68 is something else again......

No TV
No computers
No air conditioning.
No seat belts
Not even 8 track tapes yet!

I could go on but, you get the idea. My grand children don't have a clue!

I remember asking people if they believed in oral discourse before marriage.
Got mostly "No's!" and a few wierd looks.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Can U recommend a good power planer?
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:31:48 am »
I own a De Walt 735 planer and LOVE it!
The only bad thing about it is you really NEED a dust collector to use with it. That thing spits out wood chips so fast and so far that you will be up to your knees in wood dust in nothing flat if you don't have a good collector. (I darn near suffocated my son-in-law in chips when I first tried my planner out.  ;D )
What I like about it......
Fairly heavy but portable (about 60 pounds) so it doesn't need to be bolted down.
It is two speed (thickness and finish speeds)
It has a very accurate thickness gauge (you can set it for 1/4", 1/2" 3/4" and 1" stops to keep from over doing it.)
It leaves very little snipe in the wood if it is set up right.
It has three cutting knives.
What I didn't like was that you need to buy the removable tables separately and the chip collector bag is an option. (the bag does work OK if you have a large trash can to use it with.)
In my opinion it is probably the best bang for the buck in portables (lunch box planers)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Finishing oil
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:07:41 am »
Once the oil is completely dry (3 days to a week) you can re-coat wth lacquer, shellac, polyurethane or any other clear finish for more gloss if that is what your are looking for.
For a really smooth, soft looking finish, I usually sand the face with a piece of brown paper bag (4000 grit sand paper) and a coat or two of paste wax and polish it with a cotton rag (old T-shirt).
You just need to experiment with various things on scrap wood. Have you ever seen a wood project with a finish that just MADE you want to touch and feel it? That is what I strive for.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Steve's wheel truing jig
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:13:52 pm »
I like Steve's jig and will probably make one. But, I'm lazy and usually cut my wheels using a hole saw. It gives you the 1/4" hole dead center of the wheel every time and the wheels are sure to be the same diameter. They still need to be sanded though.

One tip that I might add when using a hole saw to cut wheels is to drill 1/2 or a bit more into the wood and then turn it over to finish the cut. It is easier to get the wheel out of the hole saw by prying with a screwdriver or rod through the slots on the side when you have 1/2 the wood thickness sticking out the bottom of the saw. The pilot bit will break through the bottom for aligning the saw on the back/bottom of the wood for the final cut.

He does better with his feet than I do with my hands.  :o  Besides, I couldn't see that far!  ;D
And he didn't even use a pattern!!  :o :o  :D :D :D

Just goes to show that you can do anything you want to if you try hard enough.  :)
