There is a reaction with the lemon oil and poly. On small projects it is usually not a problem, not the case with a table as you have found out. You should have used a sealer like clear laquer first. It probably won't dry and you will have to strip it off.

Naw they don't like the frying pan either. They said it had a burnt hair smell. I guess it gets it from my head. Wife thing ya know.

The old Ford Pinto was a real good car. Couldn't kill it. We use to race them (Mini Stock) at the circle track. Had allot of fun.

I agree three 1/4"  works great for me. Remember stacked thats 3/4". Pretty thick.
