I have been thinking about getting a Alaskan mill for my saw I have a husky 455 with a 20 inch bar. I can get a lot of small logs from log landings and some knots and burls. I was just wondering if the mills do a good job for small amounts of lumber

I've got an old Homelite Super XL and it works OK, the main thing is to keep the chain sharp. Another thing to make it easier is to get the logs off the ground, much easier on the back and easier to do any measuring. Here is the set up I've been using.

Question, when you cut with your Alaskan Mill, what do you do to keep the wood from checking and cracking while it dries?

Ray

I don't do anything, just let it dry and work around the cracks when I use it. Most of my projects are small to medium size so the cracks are much of an issue.

Just wondering how many here saw their own lumber? I'm using an Alaskan Mill and my beat up chainsaw and my beat up back are ready to move up. Any suggestions?

I only use them when the project is too big to turn without hitting the back of the saw. They cut too slow for me, but some really like them.

On my DW788 I loosen the tension on the blade.

I love my grizzly 14 "  with the riser kit for re-sawing.  Little over 500.00 though I think.

actually it is on sale right now.  http://www.grizzly.com/products/14-Deluxe-Bandsaw/G0555LX

I have this saw also with the riser kit. Great saw!!!

A # 1 blade is way too small for cutting 3/4".

I agree, I would use a #5.

I also have found that the thinner paper works better for puzzles. There must be fewer paper layers on the cheap stuff. The thicker wants to de-laminate when cut.

The Craftsman you showed is way underpowered at 15 amps, basically 1 hp. If all you're going to be cutting is 3/4" thick or less, 1 hp is fine, but if you're going to be cutting thicker than 3/4" especially hardwoods, your going to need at least 3 hp. For 3-4 hundred bucks you could probably get a pretty good saw on Craigslist, it might take a lil patience though to find one. As for straight cuts, ditto to what everyone else said, and build yourself a nice crosscut sled.

15 amps coverts to just over 1.5HP at 65% efficiency. Should be good for medium duty woodworking.

HF does sell some decent stuff but you do have to have a good eye to the differences in quality when you buy there.
