The Coffee Shop / Gotta Love the Irish!
« on: September 29, 2013, 06:01:43 pm »
At the National Art Gallery , in Dublin Ireland , a Canadian couple were staring at a portrait that had
them completely confused. The painting depicted three black men, totally naked, sitting on a park bench. Two of the figures had black penises but the one in the middle, had a pink .

The curator of the gallery realized that they were having trouble interpreting the painting and offered his assessment. He went on for over half an hour explaining how it depicted the sexual emasculation of the black man in a predominately white, patriarchal society.

?In fact,? he pointed out, ?some serious critics believe that the pink  also reflects the cultural and sociological oppression experienced by gay men in contemporary society.?

After the curator left, an Irish man approached the couple and said, ?Would you like to know what the painting is really about??

?Now why would you claim to be more of an expert than the curator of the gallery?? asked the husband.

?Because I?m the guy who painted it.? he replied.
?In fact, there are no black men depicted at all. They?re just three Irish coal miners. The guy in the middle went home for lunch."

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Finishing: Shellac and Alcohol Mix
« on: September 22, 2013, 08:18:25 am »
I use the shellac/denatured alcohol 50/50 mix more than anything else. I have not seen it already mixed anywhere.  I mix it in a glass jarusing an old measuring cup from the house. You do not have to be exact in the proportions. I use an old rectangular baking pan and mostly a glue brush to apply the finish.  I store the brush in the jar so no cleaning after every use.  The brush lasts 3 or 4 months.  Actually the bristle part lasts much longer but the metal handle begins to rust and I do not want that in the finish. You can purchase shellac and denatured alcohol it quarts or gallons. Dries very quickly and brings out the grain of the wood. I use the BLO/MS only on solid wood. I make my own danish using 1/3 BLO, 1/3, MS, and 1/3 polyurethane. I mix it in the same type of glass jar.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Lemon oil
« on: September 21, 2013, 09:26:37 pm »
You can purchase Lemon Oil at Walmart and some of the other big box stores. Walmart has it in with the furniture polish. Around $5 a bottle.  I have used it but now trend to shy away as it seems to never really dry.  Anything it is used on MUST be coated with some type of clear spray or it will continue to seep out of the wood and onto what ever is is against. I like the color it adds to the wood and the grain really pops. but the cons outweigh the pros so I use it very seldom any more.  When I do, I use a glue brush to apply it so as not to soak the piece.  Hope this helps

The Coffee Shop / Memorial to a Friend
« on: September 15, 2013, 10:09:58 am »
Last Sunday a close friend of 47 years passed unexpectedly. Althought he had just came home from the hospital, the procedure he had was no where near life threatening.. Hew as home for about 30 minutes when he just died. Throught a round about way, he was the influence that started me scrolling. He  was a scroll saw artist for about 15 years. We attended a craft show together in June.  He turned 65 on August 17 and we took him to lunch. I spoke with him on Saturday night, laughing and joking with a promise to talk again the next day after he was at home.  His name was Ronnie and he will be missed.  Here is a small tribute to him and his artistry.

Keefie,  I really do like both of them but I think the red may be a little better for a rose.  When I do something like that, if it is for a wedding, I try to get the colors that are being used in the wedding and if it loos good I use those.  Just my 2 pennies worth.

An 80-year old man walks into the doctor?s office for his regular check-up.

The doctor says to him, ?Ahh, Ted, how are you feeling??

?Great,? says the old man. ?I have an 18-year old wife, and she?s pregnant with my child.?

The doctor gives a concerned look and says to Ted,

?Ted, let me tell you a story. See, I have this hunter friend and one early morning, he goes out hunting, but is in such a hurry that he grabs his umbrella instead of his gun. So, as he is hunting, he spots a lion. He aims at the lion with his umbrella and shoots at it. Bam! The lion falls dead to the ground.?

?What?!? cries the old man. ?Why? that?s impossible! Someone else must have shot the lion.?

?Exactly!? says the doctor.

Danny   I use  the sawtooth hanger with hot glue.  A dab on each end where the  nails go.  Works good for me.  also use it on the D 0r  triangle hangers with no problem

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Using Aleens Clear Gel Glue....:+(
« on: September 04, 2013, 12:14:44 pm »
In most cases, I use Titebond (or another wood glue ifhave to) for wood to wood joints. I use the Aleens (regular - brown bottle) for non wood to wood  IE.-paper to wood paper to glass, and for painted surfaces. So far so good. I do CA glue sometimes for wood when the glue area is tiny.

Jim,

I have had the same problem with the BLO 50/50 mix.  I have noticed that when I use real wood pine, poplar, walnut etc, No problem. It usually drys in a day or less. Have even done two coats in one day.  However when I have used plywood  -  oak plywood 3/16 inch up to 1/2 ply the BLO mix takes forever to dry and cure.  Just my personal observation, but I no longer use the mix on ply wood. I switched to a shellac-denatured alcohol mix at 50/50, followed by a couple of coats of clear lacquer. I am happy with the results. Humidity will affect the drying time of the BLO mix also.
