General Scroll Saw Talk / Last sale of the year
« on: December 04, 2016, 08:32:10 am »
Yesterday I went to my last scheduled sale of the year.
Driving in the rain and in the dark both ways. Ugh! It is in a small town an hour and twenty minutes north of me. Last year I had a great sale there. Not so much this year. Last year, at that venue, I sold 35 of my boxes but only 11 this year.

Rain=Not many shoppers.

Even though this years event was disappointing, my years total sales were only $70 less than last years total. Less than one percent drop. I did 20 sales events this year whereas I usually did 25 in past years. I do have one small order to fill this year yet, but no more scheduled sales. I may skip this venue next year.

Not complaining, just reporting in.<grin>

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: 2 inch thick poplar
« on: November 23, 2016, 05:42:52 pm »
I have cut 1 1/2" poplar, but not 2".  Feed rate must be VERY slow and slow saw speed also.  I use a #5 polar blade.  I tried using a Heavy duty Flying Dutchman blade and found it to cut slower and broke just as easy as a #5.  #7 also works.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Foot switch
« on: November 21, 2016, 09:46:51 am »
I have foot switches on my 2 scroll saws, drill press, band saw, and sanders but I use the tap on tap off type footswitch flat on the floor.  I do not like holding my foot in a certain position as I use the tool.  This way I can stand on both feet, which helps to not strain my back while standing.  If I want the "lift my foot and the saw stops" action, I just step it on and then step it down.  The saw will then stop when I raise my foot.

This list is an excellent idea.  I wish other forums would have this also.

I made this for the event I mentioned.  It is on the 29th of this month.  I showed this one to friends of mine and two of them ordered another one for themselves.  I am working on them now.  Never know what will work/sell.

Our woodworkers club has been invited back to a Local university's Christmas celebration event.  This years theme is "Charlie Brown's Christmas". I plan to use this converted, and never sold, bird house as a display at our table.(We give away about 250 toys to the kids attending).  Birdhouse is western red cedar and snoopy is made of pine, ebony, walnut, purple heart and maple.  No paints or stains used. Combination of intarsia and double bevel inlay.

I have found that there is not much of a market for fireplace bellows but I did manage to sell one I had that had a Mason Logo inlaid into he front.  It took a small bit of "selling" but it is gone!

Brag Forum / Good sellers here in Texas
« on: October 02, 2016, 09:33:34 am »
I do inlaid images in cedar and, when finished, I have the cut outs that are not used.  I have been selling them very cheaply, and giving them away for years. Last month a customer suggested I use the cutouts of Texas as coasters so I tried it.  Sold out in a heart beat.

I have since made and sold over 250 of them.  I sell them four for $5.  A great price point at the farmers market. Some of them are 3/8" thick and others are less than 1/4".  Thickness seems to not matter to the buyers.

I am now making some of scrap 1/4" plywood.  I ran out of my whole scrap horde of various other woods, making them.

I stack cut them and dip them in Poly a few coats and then a spray finish of poly.

Attached is a photo of some I made of a mystery wood I had.  It may be cherry.

Spirit horse:  I sell 99% of my boxes for $20 I sold these for $25.  I am in a low wage part of the country so my prices must be kept low in order to sell much of anything.  If I wanted to travel to Dallas , for instance, I am sure I could get more for these boxes. I am just too lazy for that.  My $20 boxes cost me $3 in materials and two hours to make.  (making them twenty at a time).
