Spirithorse did bring up a good point about 2 separate pieces for the center
Do you see a problem with doing that way? or is it just easier for you
to do it the way you do

If you Google pencil holders, or mdf pencil holders, look at the images and you'll get a pretty good idea
of what you are after.

You can always buy the frame first and fit whatever thickness wood you need.
Size your portrait accordingly.
If you make your own frames than thickness of the wood you use for portraits
don't really matter.
I'm sure there are places where you can buy frames real cheap
As for glass, I think that falls into the personal preference category.
