Thanks for the input. I'd still like to hear more. I added the size to the original post.
I sell on ETSY as I don't have time for shows due to my main job.

I also sell on ETSY.  For something of that size I would not be afraid to put a good price on it.  Get your time and material costs at the very least back.  Say $30 - $60 USD plus shipping.

That came out pretty nice.  Seadog852 one of the first things you have to take in account is the venue that you are going to try to sell this at.  Will it be a craft show and Art Show or just showing it to folks and hoping?  I am making this point, how much you will get for that will vastly differ between the different venues.

How large is it?  If it is larger than something say 8 x 10 then you can charge more.  I have no idea what kind of area you are living in.  This too makes a huge difference. Is the area Rich, Poor, on the coast, full of fellow scrollers, or completely void of fellow scrollers?  Besides the cost of the material you used in making this you need to account for those variables as well as the time you took to make it.
In my area at the craft fairs that if it was not too large might sell for as much as $30 - $40.  Thing is you set the price, if it is too high it will not sell however you have the ability to lower it if you feel this is what you need to do.  A lot of folks use 3x the cost of materials to make up a base price and then add to that what they think their time might be worth.

Hope this helped.

If I remember correctly the nut on the motor is a LEFT handed thread.  It tightens and loosens backwards from how you are used to it.  If you are wary of that then perhaps taking it to an authorized service center for the dewalt - http://www.dewalt.com/Find-Service-Center.aspx They have a guarenteed repair cost program that is pretty good, especially if you have something major bad with the saw.

Matt those look good.  Bubinga is fairly expensive per board foot.  So $10 for that bowl would be too low go for $15 you can always lower your asking price.  As long as the bowl has a good feel, looks finished you should be able to get that no problem.  Keep up the great work.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Band saw cutting help

You want to know something it is on Youtube some where :)  A lot of what you can do with a bandsaw there are methods to do the same thing with a scroll saw.  A lot of times smaller though.  Boxes with drawers are doable with a scrollsaw.  Kinda fun actually.  Granted you can not get the logs that folks use for the bandsaw boxes under the arm of the scroll saw :)  Check out Steve's library of patterns he has several good to learn on box patterns available.

Charlie those look pretty good.  Any thought to making an ebook with them in it or are you selling them separately?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: selling items?
« on: January 17, 2015, 05:59:51 am »
Hi Matthew:
What I found over the years is that using a scroll saw to try and make "decent" money is hard.
As a rule you can always cover the cost of the materials used.
It's the time that you put in that makes it hard to recoup.
If you happen to hit on something that is fast and easy to make you are well ahead of the game.
You have to see what people are into in your area and go from there.
What I do and sell here in Ontario doesn't necessarily mean it will sell good in your area.
Trial and error, and hope people like what they see and give you orders to make more.
One thing that is always a hit is anything you can "personalize". Check out Steve Goods programs.
Easy to use and quick to make
I was once told " put a heart on it" it will sell. Seems anything with a heart on it is a good seller also.
Bottom line through all this:
If you treat it like a business, you will be discouraged more often than not.
Keep it fun, sell a few things here and there and you will enjoy it a lot more.
Good Luck with your sales - Hope you get what you're after
Fab4

Exactly - Keeping it fun is critical.

I have been trying to sell my scroll saw work, but so far have felt upset because I put a lot of work into my boxes, but can't sell them for more than 20$. I understand that 20 is a fair price, I'm just not getting enough back for what i put in. If anyone has any ideas on simpler, smaller things that sell well, please comment. Thanks in advance

Matt a lot is going to depend upon where you are trying to sell them.  In general if you are selling at a craft fair you are looking at the $20 - $30 range.  If you are at an art festival you can charge more.

The point I am making is that in general when selling your wares that unless you are at an art gallery or have international fame as a scroller you more than likely will not recoup your time spent making them.

To give you an example : Lets say I figure my time to be $20 / hour if I take and cut a basket that takes me 1 1/2 hours to cut that would be $30 for just my time. If I charge for material - $10.  So that bowl is now priced at $40.  It has been my experience that folks will spend up to around $20 - $30 with little thought but more than that unless they really want it they have to justify the expense to themselves before shelling out the extra.  Some of the items I make take me a couple of days yet if I tried to sell a bowl for $100 when not at an art show I would be left holding the bowl at the end of the craft fair.

Do not give up though on trying to sell your wares. It will take time for folks to recognize your talent.  Keep up the good work and keep plugging along.
