General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Whirligigs....

Danny, I recommend "Making Whirligigs and other Wind Toys" by Sharon Pierce.  The copy I have has a copyright of 1985.  Lots of patterns and explanations of  the mechanics of wind toys including painting advice.  I made a number of them years ago, and will likely do so again in the future.

BTW: check your email

I'm with you Joey.  I had a 16 inch RBI and now have a 26" and wouldn't trade it for any saw I have had my hands on.  I really hope that Bushton MFG (the current owners) restores RBI to its place in the market.

Instead of the usual approaches to dust collection, how about a downdraft type system around the table.  A ready attachment for a magnification system would help as well.

Yes, and slow your blade speed down as well.

Danny,
They are correct, but if changing the password doesn't work, contact me and I will send you a file that will help.  I had the same problem.

The best home protection is a sign in your front yard that reads, "My neighbor doesn't believe in guns."  Don't forget the arrow pointing whichever way you want.

I use a 60 in the table saw and a 80 in the Radial arm and get them both professionally sharpened whenever they don't feel new.  $10 to sharpen a 10" carbide blade is a great investment in my book.

The Rigid gets a lot of reviews.  I suggest you look harder at your main purpose.  If curved edge sanding is your strongest need, get the spindle sander, but if belt sanding is your biggest need (especially for material removal) get a larger belt sander.  Even the belt sander on the Rigid is intended more for edge and small piece sanding.  Personally I use my drill press as a spindle sander and found an attachment which makes the spindle oscillate.

I agree with GB.  Look around on Craigslist or take advantage of claz.org (similar to Craigslist but includes all free online classifieds and you can create a search and then have it email the results to you daily).  There are a lot of old Craftsman and other stationairy 6X48 bets sanders with 0 pr 10 inch discs attached that can be bought reasonably and will outlast and outperform a smaller benchtop.  My shop is crammed for space, but I wouldn't part with my old sander.

I have a little older model Waacom that I bought to aid in digitizing embroidery patterns for my wife.  They do work well.  Now if I could only really learn to use google sketchup for woodworking and incorporate the tablet into that.

Gotta watch those capes in a woodshop though.  They are dangerous around table saws, lathes, drill presses, anything that  spins.   8)
