General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Skip Tooth vs Reverse Tooth
« on: April 30, 2010, 06:44:24 pm »
Gordo,
A tip when cutting with reverse tooth blades: Since the bottom teeth are pointing up, the wood will want to "bounce" up and down on the table. You will have to hold down the wood a little harder than usual, but soon will become second nature to you!

Yes I would agree it is all equally important. Plus the three P's. Patients, Practice, Persistance.  8)
I'm with Russ on this! The three P's!

Gordo,
I use nothing but reverse tooth blades. I know most scrollers use the Flying Dutchman blades, but I prefer Olson.blades. I buy them by the gross From www.sloanswoodshop.com.
Since I do many types of scrolling I keep on hand blade sizes from 0/2R to 12R.

Wildbill. Most of the things I make end up as gifts. I teach scroll saw at the local Woodcraft and have a lot of my projects on display in the store!

Hey ufgator, I'm not a gator, but my wife is! So I guess that makes me her gator bait!
As for your question, I would use a #5R or a #7R.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Excalibur vs Dewalt
« on: April 25, 2010, 03:00:27 pm »
I own a DeWalt and have tried a Excalibur. I love the tilt feature of the Excalibur. It has the same blade clamps as the Dewalt, and seems to be built to last for many years.
I am a top feeder and love that the upper arm of my Dewalt Lowers the blade into the hole by gravity.
On the Excalibur, the upper arm stays up when you lift it. You have to pull it down to feed the blade. Bottom feeders will like this feature, But I Don't.
On the Dewalt the tension is adjusted with a lever on the front of the upper arm. On the Excalibur, there is a lever on the upper arm to tension the blade, but to adjust the tension, you have to reach to the back of the upper arm and turn a knob. I like the DeWalt system much better.
Money was not an issue when I was looking for a new saw. I gave the Excalibur a good workout, But chose to stay with Dewalt.

I use a 12" bench top drill press with a mini pin chuck to allow use of the small numbered drill bits. I use the one available at www.sloanwoodshop.com.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Hold Down Foot
« on: April 25, 2010, 01:25:25 pm »
As a scroll saw instructor at Woodcraft in Ventura Ca. I have to teach the students to use the hold down on the saws in class. At the end of the class I tell them they can saw without them at home.
The hold down is mandated by law on all scroll saws sold in the U.S. But as others have said it gets in the way especialy when cutting inside cuts.
On some saws the air blower tube is mounted to the hold down, so you have to keep it installed unless you can mount the air hose someplace else.
I have two DW788's in my shop, and do not have them istalled on either.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Blade size
« on: April 20, 2010, 05:09:39 pm »
Tom, I don't have an answer to your problem, but it is important to keep your blades in seperate labeled containers. I keep mine in plastic tubes. I get mine from www.sloanswoodshop.com. I make a label of the blade size and type and attach it to the tube.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: blade getting dull
« on: April 20, 2010, 12:15:38 am »
John, I tell my students that when the blade no longer does what you want it to, It's time to change the blade.
Blades are cheap so if it's not cutting well change it!

I used to have a Jim Dandy on my saw, but took it off when I relized it was actually slowing me down. I feed from the top, so it is easier for me to lift the arm with one hand and feed the blade from the top  with the other hand. Then I let the weight of the upper arm to drop the blade through the hole.
When cutting a project with hundreds of inside cuts, it takes to much time to have to pull the upper arm down.
