The Coffee Shop / Re: Does anyone else get my odd humor?
« on: January 08, 2013, 11:44:20 am »
When I was making my first cutting board (and using another wood working blog) I had learned that mineral oil was the recommended finish for such projects.
After finishing my cutting board, I posted a picture of it and as a joke mentioned that I had noticed that it said "Lubricant laxative" on the bottle and was afraid that I might give my whole family the "Green apple dirty's"!  :o
I was assured that once cured, it was TOTALLY safe for use. But, BOY!  :o The replies to my post were a RIOT to read for the next week!!  :D :D :D :D

The Coffee Shop / Re: Warning about E15 gas
« on: January 06, 2013, 01:58:44 pm »
Back when I was racing (Go Karts) I raced in both gasoline class and alcohol class at different times.
I will tell you this....
Alcohol is more expensive per gallon and it requires twice the gallons to go the same distance.  :o  True that it gives more horse power and the car will go faster, but we also ran gas through the motor when the race was over to clean out the tank and carb.  ;)  Alcohol WILL corrode when left in fuel tanks and carburetors not to mention dry out gaskets and cut the protective oil film off of moving parts.
I have been against mixing gas and alcohol since the beginning as a fuel for the normal street vehicle. It just does not make sense to me.
True that the newer cars have different gaskets and o-rings in the motors to fend off the damage done there.  But, there again the cost of making the change to the cars along with the cost of the fuel and MPG is just costing the average motorist a lot more per mile traveled than necessary.
I also will say that I live in Kansas and corn is one of our biggest crops grown by farmers here but, even they will tell you that they would rather feed people and cattle with their corn than burn it up in a fuel for commuters. This whole idea is costing EVERYONE a lot more than they might realize.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: good soft wood to cut with
« on: January 05, 2013, 05:37:17 pm »
Soft woods in general are not good or easy to cut with. They break and crack too easy and the blade wants to follow the grain. About the easiest and cheapest wood to use is poplar and it is available at the big box stores. It is kind of soft but is really a hard wood and I use it for a lot of my wood working including scrolling.

I don't have that pattern but, I have a suggestion.
If you have that picture in your computer, why don't you just print it off and start cutting? I guess you might wan't to enlarge it to suit yourself.

I've never done that either but, it sounds like a good idea!   8)
I say GO FOR IT!! No guts, no glory!  ;)
I'm all for experimenting and trying new things. You may be on to something here and if it doesn't work, try it again.  ::)  (I'll try anything twice. :o)  It may hit the HIT PARADE for the future of scrolling.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Sanding

I guess you could trim an emery board down to fit in the smaller holes where your file won't fit but, personally, I wouldn't worry about it.  ::)  Who is going to notice?  ???  I just sand the front a bit (and the back for the fuzzy's) and put on a finish. If you want the front to be a bit more  glossy, rub the front with a square of brown paper sack and apply more finish.  ;)

I noticed that the plunge base is larger than the fixed base. Is it large enough to have room for the screws on the table to match? If so you could drill and tap holes in the base and use it. You would have to remove the springs in the plunge part but, it would make it a lot easier to adjust the bit height in the table. If it is too tall for the table, add some legs (feet) to the table and jack it up a few inches.
Just another "rigging" possibility.  ;)
I too have a masters degree in "MAKE IT WORK" type situations.  ;D

The only suggestion that I have is to cut the name (wording) twice, out of two pieces of wood and then glue them together back to back. Unless the word you want is "MOM" or something similar.  ;D  ;)

The Coffee Shop / Re: And to whom do YOU make donations?
« on: December 21, 2012, 10:10:00 am »
I wrote off the Red Cross years ago.  When I was in the service, one of our young sailors had a family emergency and needed help getting home.  The Red Cross was contacted and helped him with expenses.  When he returned, he was billed for the expenses.

I had  a similar experience. One of our Airmen lost his mother and went home for the funeral. Two months later his father passed. The commander gave him and emergency leave but the Red Cross would not even LOAN him money to go home again. We took up a collection and sent him on his way. It was very hard to get donations to the Red Cross from our group after that.

My brother and I did quite a bit of research on spindle sanders and decided that the Ridged sander was the "best bang for the buck". Now we each own one and are both very happy with our choice.

We have a "SUPER" recycling service here too but, I worry about the lid popping off of the can and causing a dangerous mess for the people working there. I guess I could tape the lid on but still, some one has to open it up to see what is in the can. Think that I would rather "hand deliver" and explain in person, and let them decide how to handle the sharp stuff.
