General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Brad Nailer
« on: February 20, 2013, 10:16:06 am »
I have a brad nailer, it is an air powered Porter Cable and I use it some for putting trim on larger projects or for holding glue joints at corners but, not on picture frames. For picture frames I just glue smaller ones at the miter and use half lap joints or splines for larger ones. I know that gluing end grain is not very strong or advisable but, usually small frames just hang on the wall and do not get a lot of handling or abuse. If I am concerned about a given frame after gluing, sometimes I drill a 1/4" hole in the edge and through the joint and insert a 1/4" dowel with glue in the hole and then trim off the excess dowel and sand smooth. The dowel joint is not very noticeable after finishing and it is on the edge which is not often seen anyway. It doesn't really matter if you dowel the miter from the side edges or the top and bottom, it is equally strong either way.
Hope that helps.

Yes you are right even being safe can still get hurt why they are called accidents.

Lawyers don't believe in accidents!  >:(  In their eyes someone caused your injury.  ::)  In most cases it is the manufacturer of what ever caused  your pain. SUE!!! SUE!! SUE!  :o
That is why we are in the sea of laws now  that puts businesses out of business.  :'(

The Coffee Shop / Re: how to make a wooden lamp shade, real interesting!!!

O.K. ......Now WHO is going to clean up that MESS? Took two days to cut and two weeks to sweep up the shavings.

I've seen other videos of similar things and can't help but think "What a waste of wood."  I mean, I really like the lamp shade and the mans talent but, to start with a log that large and end up with something so delicate and light with 98% of the wood on the floor just blows my mind.  :'( :-\ :P ::) :o >:(

I have five electric sanders (including the Ridgid osculating one) and about eight hand sanding blocks and three types of sanding attachments that are used in the drill press. I use them all from time to time and each and every one has a purpose and are necessary for various needs. Just like clamps (84) and routers (6) you can never have too many sanding methods.  ;D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dust Control
« on: February 15, 2013, 10:04:21 am »
My big problem is remembering to put a mask on.   I don't leave them in the shop or they will get covered in dust, and once I'm out there, I'm too Lazy to go back in to find one.

Get your self a large "Ziploc" freezer bag and store them in it. Yea, the bag gets dusty but it keeps the mask's clean and ready to go. You can even put some sort of clip on the wall or a cabinet at eye level and clip the bag to it for ease of seeing and use so you don't forget.

I've had one for years and love it so much that I now have two of them. When I bought mine (when they first came out) there was only one style so I can't comment on the differences or how much more helpful the newer ones would be. If I were to buy one today, knowing what I know now, I would GO FOR THE GOLD and buy the best one I could afford.
They are very handy on the table saw (when cutting narrow strips especially) and the router table for control of small items. Just remember, saw blades and router bits don't really care what they cut and plastic is no problem for them.  ;D  However replacement parts are available for them. DAMHIK.  ;)

LOL yep that could by a true story. a blonde woman asked me once where brown eggs came from and i told her brown chickens and she believed it.

What makes you think that is not true?

Rog
same reason i know that chocolate milk don't come from brown cows  :D

I know that chocolate milk doesn't come from brown cows. You must put chocolate  powder into white milk but, where do brown eggs come from? Are you going to tell me that it depends on what the chicken eats? Then why are most eggs white when you gather them from the chicken coop but occasionally there will be a brown egg among them when all the chickens eat the same food?

I have a LOT of favorites but this one is one I did several years ago.

I've made a lot of vases and bowls out of all kinds of wood but, plywood seems to really get attention.  ;D

When my wife turned 40 I told her that I was going to trade her in for two 20 year old's.
She told me that I wasn't wired for 220.
She was right.

BOY!!! You have opened a can of worms here!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Names..... I once knew a rather large woman who's last name was "Lightfoot" !
When I was just a boy,our neighbors name was "Sidebottom"
In the Air Force we had a "Lt. Stupar".(guess what his nickname was..behind his back of course) and a "Major Major" (really!)
The smallest guy in our units last name was "Bear" and when it was found out that we had a guy who's real name was "Shirley Fontnot Jr." the laughs seemed to never stop.

There is a funny part to the story, they stole several tools that were broken and waiting to go to the dump, while leaving behind things that worked.

That reminds me of a story that I heard a long time ago.
There was a garbage strike going on in New York City around Christmas time, so people would put their trash in boxes, gift wrap them and put the box on the back seat of an unlocked car.
Yep, you're right, the thieves took care of getting rid of the stinky stuff.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

GreyBeard,

I had my cataract surgery just last year. It makes a world of difference for the better.
Just as an aside, I elected to be near sighted so I can read and use the computer and scroll saw with out glasses but, of course I need them for distance. I'm not sure that I made the right decision yet as I need glasses to watch TV and of course to drive. Most folks that have the surgery go for farsightedness so they don't have to wear glasses at all except for reading and close work. It is just something to think about.
The nice part about my decision is that my wife is nearsighted also so, if I forget my glasses, I can just borrow
hers.  ;D
