General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Band saws
« on: April 21, 2012, 09:40:50 am »
I have a Jet with a 6 inch riser.  I have outfitted it with guides from Carter along with some other accessories.  It impressed me wednesday night when I was able to resaw a 16 inch long 12 inch wide slab of 1 inch walnut into two boards for the top and bottom of a box.  I agree the blades are important, (again I like the Carter blades) but correct setup is essential.  There are videos online for instruction.  A well setup bandsaw is a very versatile tool.

I'm in!  Been here since the beginning like many of you and check in several times most days.  I'm not too good with time zones so just to be safe I may drink that toast hourly from 5 to10 tonight (just to be safe of course).

 Happy Anniversary friends!

What kind of glue?  You might try cautious application of a heat gun, raising the temp slowly so as not to blister the finish.  Anyway if you get the part off and only damage the finish, you can re-apply the finish more easily than making a new part.

boxmaker, you are right.  You can buy it premixed in either amber or clear.  You can also thin it with denatured alcohol and turn it in to a wipe on finish if you like.  I thin it and spray it on then, after a few coats, rub it down with 0000 steel wool dipped in paste wax.  Makes a fine finish that is smooth to the touch with an even luster.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Grass Interfering With Scrolling

Last year we pulled out all of our grass in the front yard and replaced it with jasmine.  The back is mostly decked and the rest is plants and mulch.  Gave the lawn mower to a friend.  In this part of Florida grass either requires artificial life support or looks like crap.  No more mowing for me.   We will just have to edge once or twice a month.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Inside cut sanding

I find that with Flying Dutchman UR blades, there is little or no need for sanding inside cuts.  Years ago before reverse tooth blades sanding was such a pain it was very frustrating.  Now I only sand the surfaces and that is usually before I start cutting.

Did you try a new blade?  A 2/0 is a very fine blade to use on 1/2 inch plywood.  You might try a larger blade like a 3 or even a 5.  Also, I know it sounds dumb, but check to make sure the blade isnt in upside down.  It's much more common than you think.

HI Tony,
It gets hot here in St Petersburg to.  I have a small window unit I use when ventilation just isn't enough.  Then I close the doors and crank it on.  I did insulate above the ceiling this year, which really helps.  Yes the unit does get clogged with sawdust, but I can't think how it would be a fire hazard.  Occasionally I remove the filter screen from the front, vacuum the front and follow up by blowing compressed air through the condensers.  You can really tell the difference in the air flow.  I had also thought about just using some duct tape to fasten a furnace filter to the front of the unit to see if that helped.  I also have no dust collection in my little shop.

We had a ball.  We built a target stand of pvc and 2X4's and lined the top rack with pie pans and the bottom one with pizza pans from the $ store.  Shot up everything including the pvc.  Safety first of course, especially with the 2 Grandson's in tow.  Karl, we were at Pop's near Holiday Park.  Not too concerned about the snakes as I relocate the diamondbacks on MacDill as a routine part of my job.  Guess I am just used to them.  I hope everybody had as much fun this weekend as we did!

Good to see you back on Gabby.  I can sympathize with your emotions.  Not exactly the same, but laid up after my motorcycle wreck with a shattered kneecap etc.  I felt pretty useless.  Trust me!  You are anything but useless or without value.  You will improve, and the fact that you are working towards means it will come sooner.  My wife asked just this weekend how you were doing.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Recommendations for a band saw

Judy,  If I were replacing my tires I would replace both at the same time.  When you adjust the angle of the top wheel to achieve the tracking of the blade on the tire, you want the blade centered on the tire.  Where the blade sits in relation to the crown on the wheel can affect how much drift you get when cutting.  If you need it I think I can mail you a cd with a video on setting up a bandsaw.
